Is It Time For A Professional Caregiver?

Aging has many changes, sometimes making it difficult to care for yourself safely. If you’re experiencing changes that make daily living tasks like walking, cleaning, and cooking more challenging, it may be time to consider hiring a professional caregiver.

What Is A Professional Caregiver?

A professional caregiver is a trained individual that helps you with daily tasks. Visiting Angels is an at-home care agency, meaning our caregivers come to your home to assist with household tasks like cooking, laundry, and light cleaning. Our caregivers can also help with nonmedical personal tasks like bathing and grooming.

Professional caregivers do not have a medical license. They cannot help with medical tasks like administering medication, changing IVs, or dressing wounds. However, if you need regular medical assistance, caregivers can help schedule appointments and provide transportation to and from your doctor.

Type of Caregiving Services

At Visiting Angels, we offer various types of caregiving services, all customizable to meet each client's needs. A few of our popular caregiving services are:

  • Companion care is our most popular care service. As the name suggests, the foundation of this service is companionship. Caregivers will spend time with clients as they run errands, check out the latest community events, or enjoy at-home activities. Our caregivers also want clients to feel safe and comfortable at home as they assist with household tasks like light cleaning, cooking, and medication reminders.
  • Personal care provides the same assistance as our companion care services but with more hands-on help. Personal care is for clients who need help with mobility, showering, dressing, toileting, and grooming.
  • Respite care is a temporary care service that allows family caregivers to offload some of the care responsibilities they undertake when caring for a loved one. Many families use respite care when they’re out of town or need a break to reset and recharge from caregiving.
  • Transitional care helps clients return home after a hospital stay. The primary goal of our transitional care services is to help reduce the risk of hospital readmission. Caregivers start their care at the hospital, talking with doctors and ensuring clients follow proper follow-up care once they return home.

Signs You May Need A Caregiver

Many seniors enjoy the benefits of working with an at-home caregiver, such as companionship, comfort, and safety while living independently. While not every older adult needs a caregiver, the following signs may indicate that you should consider working with one.

  • You’re easily fatigued by simple housework, like laundry and vacuuming
  • You have difficulty cooking for yourself, especially preparing meals like cutting foods or following a recipe
  • You sometimes avoid going up and down stairs for fear of falling
  • You sometimes avoid personal hygiene because it’s challenging to manage on your own
  • You have fallen at home in the last six months
  • You no longer have a driver’s license, or your family has expressed concerns about your driving
  • You have trouble remembering to take your medications
  • You were recently diagnosed with a chronic health condition or cognitive condition like dementia
