Dental-Friendly Meals for Seniors
It’s essential for seniors to get adequate nutrition, but that’s easier said than done when you experience dental problems that make chewing difficult or painful, or you’re a denture-wearer.
Foods to Avoid
Your dentist will likely give you guidelines, but generally, older adults with dental issues should try to avoid foods that are sticky, crunchy, fibrous, or require a lot of chewing. That includes items such as:
- Seeds, including berries with small seeds
- Popcorn
- Steak and other tough meats
- Caramel and other sticky candies
- Pineapple
- Gum
Nourishing and Gentle Food Choices
Fortunately, seniors can still enjoy plenty of tasty foods, even with dental issues. Here are several healthy meal ideas that are gentle on teeth and gums.
Breakfast
Oatmeal: Oatmeal is incredibly high in fiber, a nutrient that most adults aren’t getting enough of. Instead of adding nuts or granola, top your oatmeal with soft fresh fruit, like peaches.
Greek yogurt: Craving something sweet, but healthy? Greek yogurt is packed with protein, and tastes delicious mixed with honey.
Scrambled eggs: For a dose of healthy fats and protein, enjoy an egg scrambled with cheese or soft veggies, like spinach. Eggs are a superfood, and have been shown to increase cognitive health in seniors. Just be sure to cut your scrambled eggs into small pieces to make them easier to chew.
Lunch
Tuna salad: Tuna is full of protein, B vitamins, magnesium, and many other minerals. Depending on your level of chewing ability, tuna can be served on crackers, lettuce, or with pasta.
Soup: Soups are an easy way to fit many filling and nutrient-dense foods in, like potatoes, lentils, and soft veggies. They can be blended to make the soup smoother and easier to consume.
Protein bowl: Protein bowls can be easily customizable to your diet and preferences. Simply top quinoa or rice with eggs, avocado, hummus, beans, or slow cooked meat for a filling lunch.
Dinner
Slow cooked meats: While you should avoid steak, pot roast, roast beef, and ground beef are all possible due to their soft texture. Enjoy with a side of mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes.
Baked fish: Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, plus it’s tender when baked in the oven. Steamed vegetables are the perfect accompaniment to the dish.
Soft tacos: You can still celebrate Taco Tuesday in a safe manner. Pile a soft tortilla with ground beef or chicken, refried beans, avocado, and shredded cheese.
Snack ideas: Cottage cheese, pudding, applesauce, smoothies, hummus and pita bread, rice pudding, bananas.
