Why Walking Is The Most Underrated Form Of Exercise

Why Walking Is The Most Underrated Form Of Exercise

Many people equate a beneficial workout with profuse sweating, shortness of breath, and sore limbs. This is the false idea that exercise does nothing for you if you don’t feel tired after a workout.

Moving your body in any fashion is good for you, and walking is one of the most overlooked forms of exercise. It’s a simple workout that people of all ages can do, providing many physical and mental benefits.

Benefits Of Walking For Seniors

You may not drip sweat or feel exhausted after a walk, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t getting physical and mental benefits from walking. Spending as little as 20 to 30 minutes walking per day can:

  • Improve your sleep
  • Increase your energy
  • Prevent weight gain
  • Lower blood sugar, pressure, and cholesterol
  • Lower your risk of depression and anxiety
  • Decrease stress
  • Improve muscle strength and mobility

Walking is also a great workout option for seniors because it’s a low-impact movement, meaning you won’t put as much stress on your joints as you would with other cardio exercises such as running.

Many seniors also enjoy walking because it is accessible. Unlike other workouts, there are minimal barriers to starting a walking routine. You don’t need special gear or equipment to walk. Even seniors who have mobility restraints can often walk with the help of a walker or cane and the assistance of a loved one or caregiver.

Tips For Making The Most Of Walking

Like any exercise, the more you put into walking, the better results you will see. Consider these tips to get the most out of your walking routine.

  • Wear proper fitness apparel. Anytime you work out or even walk, you want to wear breathable and supportive attire. This includes supportive footwear that secures your ankle, reducing your risk of tripping and falling. If balance is an issue, try using walking sticks for extra stability and to relieve additional pressure from your joints.
  • Stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle on your walk to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Keep yourself safe from the sun. Even on cloudy days, wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
  • Play with your pace. Try walking at different paces to spice up your workout.
  • Try different trails or walking paths. Different walking trails and paths have varying elevations, which can add a small challenge to your walk.
  • Use arm weights. If you want to build more strength during your walks, consider using arm weights or holding light dumbbells.
