Stroke Symptoms and Warning Signs

Stroke Symptoms and Warning Signs

Every three minutes in the U.S., someone dies from a stroke, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For those who survive a stroke, long-term side effects may include memory problems, trouble speaking, drastic personality changes, weakness, paralysis, and issues with emotional regulation.

When it Comes to Strokes, Every Minute Counts

The following signs and test mentioned below come from the CDC, which explains how fast treatment can mitigate brain damage from a stroke. If you or your senior loved one exhibits any of the following warning signs, seek medical attention immediately.

Numbness

Feeling numbness or weakness in their face, arms, or legs, particularly on one side of the body.

Confusion

Someone experiencing a stroke will have problems speaking or understanding what another person is saying.

Fainting or Seizure

Although less common, it’s possible for someone to briefly lose consciousness during the early stages of a stroke.

Severe Headache

A sudden severe headache with no recognizable cause could indicate a stroke.

Struggling to See

Abnormal and sudden vision changes in one or both eyes, like blurriness, dimness, or loss of vision, should be a red flag.

Trouble Walking

Take note of a sudden inability to walk, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.

Act F.A.S.T.

The most potent stroke remedies are only effective if a stroke is identified within the first three hours of symptoms. Here’s a simple test to perform if you suspect someone is having a stroke. Remember the word FAST.

F- Face. Have the person attempt to smile. Notice if their mouth droops at all or looks uneven.

A- Arms. Instruct them to raise their arms. Pay attention to either arm drifting downward.

S- Speech. Ask them to say a simple phrase. Are they slurring their words at all?

T- Time. If they have any of these symptoms, it’s time to call 911 immediately.

Because early detection is key with strokes, it’s crucial for you to write down the exact timeframe when symptoms first started to appear. If you believe you are having a stroke, don’t attempt to drive yourself to the hospital. Those who are witnessing their loved one have a stroke should not drive them either. In both circumstances, an ambulance is necessary to transport the person so that lifesaving treatment can be administered on the way to the hospital.
