Understanding the 4 Stages of Pneumonia in Seniors

Pneumonia is a dangerous illness that can be very bad for seniors, especially those whose immune systems aren't strong enough or who already have health problems. Knowing the four steps of pneumonia can help families spot early signs and get medical help immediately. At Visiting Angels of Burlington, we help seniors sick with pneumonia or other illnesses get better by giving them caring in-home care.

The 4 Stages of Pneumonia

Pneumonia progresses in four distinct stages, each with its symptoms and challenges:

Congestion

The first stage occurs within 24-48 hours of infection. Seniors may experience mild symptoms such as a cough, fatigue, and slight fever. The lungs begin to fill with fluid, making breathing more difficult.

Red Hepatization

During this stage, which can last 2-3 days, the lungs become inflamed, and red blood cells accumulate. Symptoms worsen, leading to high fever, chills, chest pain, and increased difficulty breathing.

Gray Hepatization

This stage, occurring around days 4-6, is marked by the breakdown of red blood cells and an influx of immune cells to fight the infection. While fever may subside, seniors often feel extremely weak and struggle to breathe.

Resolution

In this final stage, the body gradually clears the infection, and lung function improves. However, recovery can be slow, and seniors may still feel fatigued for weeks.
