Sundowners Syndrome: What It Is and How to Cope

If you are responsible for the care of a loved one who has dementia or Alzheimer’s, you may have some experience or familiarity with Sundowners Syndrome. This condition is characterized by confusion, memory loss, agitation, and wandering during the evening hours or once the sun has set. Unfortunately, this condition affects up to 20% of seniors who have Alzheimer’s. The Visiting Angels Home Care team wants you to be aware that Sundowners Syndrome can also occur in individuals with dementia or those individuals who have had a long hospital stay.

Some of the symptoms that may occur include crying or fear, rapid changes in mood, anger or agitation, stubbornness, restlessness, and depression. While the cause of the syndrome is unknown, there are some factors that may trigger the condition to occur. Visiting Angels Home Care suggests that you speak with your loved one’s care team to ensure that your senior is well looked after, especially if he or she suffers from this syndrome.

So, how can you help someone who may be experiencing Sundowners Syndrome? This is a good question and one that many care providers ask. Below, the Visiting Angels Home Care team will discuss some things you can do to help your loved one cope.

  • Try to create and establish a regular routine with your loved one. A routine can help avoid surprises that may occur throughout the day and thus reduce any anxiety or confusion that may occur
  • Plan out the day as carefully as possible. Those with Sundowners Syndrome benefit from vigorous activities that take place in the morning. You should avoid too many activities packed into one day. In fact, experts recommend just two activities a day
  • Watch your loved one’s diet. There may be a correlation between the food your loved one consumes and the symptoms that they display. You should help your loved one avoid sugary food and caffeine, especially later in the day
  • Keep the home well lit. This is a great way to help your loved one as it allows him or her to move around safely inside of their home
  • Minimize noise from the TV, radio, and other devices that exist in the home, especially during the evening hours. This will help ensure that your loved one does not experience stress or anxiety
