TIP: Involve your loved one in the process as much as possible and reassure them that the point of in-home care is to preserve their independence, not take it away.

Fear of Strangers

As people age, they often become more anxious and fearful of newcomers. 

TIP: Again, involve your loved one in the process as much as possible. Involvement reduces anxiety. Also, make sure you choose a provider who takes great care in matching your caregiver to your loved one and provides the opportunity to meet with them prior to beginning services.

Dementia Can Augment Fear

If your loved one is suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, it may be difficult for them to accept any change in routine–especially a newcomer. 

TIP: Only work with a provider who has caregivers experienced in providing care to seniors with these conditions. Make sure to arrange an initial “meet and greet” with the caregiver prior to them beginning services.
