Winter Activities To Enjoy In Flagstaff

Winter Activities To Enjoy In Flagstaff

The city of Flagstaff leaves nothing to be desired during the holidays. From free horse-drawn carriage rides and magical light and window displays to watching a six-foot pinecone drop to ring in the new year, ask any of us, and we’ll say no one does this season as Flagstaff does.

While the holiday hustle and bustle may have come to an end, the excitement doesn’t have to stop there. Flagstaff’s charm extends well beyond the season, offering a variety of fun activities and cozy spots to enjoy throughout the winter months. Whether you’re looking to explore the community or stay in, we’ve got a few great ideas everyone in your family will enjoy.

Community-Wide Things to Do in Flagstaff

One of winter's most fun and often overlooked parts is exploring your neighborhood and engaging with your community. Winter brings something magical, and sharing that magic with your neighbors makes it even more special. For a small excursion out of the house, consider one of the below ideas:

  • Downtown Flagstaff: There’s always something to do in historic downtown Flagstaff, and with the holiday decorations still adorning the streets, now is a beautiful time to explore it. Enjoy the holiday window displays, cozy lights, and warm spirits of your fellow community neighbors. Here are a few local favorites to stop at:
    • Macy's European Coffeehouse & Bakery
    • Late for the Train Coffee
    • Tourist Home Flagstaff Café
    • MartAnne’s Breakfast Palace
    • MIX Flagstaff
    • Lumberyard Brewing Co. (for casual dining)
    • The Toasted Owl Café
    • Shift Kitchen & Bar
    • Pizzicletta (for a quieter lunch option)
    • Josephine’s Restaurant
  • Explore the Night Sky: Lowell Observatory offers the opportunity to explore the beauty of the universe, but it also plays a large part in Flagstaff’s history as the world’s first International Dark Sky City–a commitment to protecting the darkness of the night skies by reducing light pollution. Experience something truly out-of-this-world while connecting yourself to an important piece of Flagstaff. You can even meet with an astronomer at one of their Saturday events!
  • Annual Flagstaff Chocolate Walk: Hosted by the Flagstaff Visitor Center, this annual tradition takes a walk through historic downtown and makes it delicious by adding chocolate! This event is taking place on February 8th, 2025, and it’s such a big hit you’ll need to secure your spot asap. Call the visitor center for more information.

You can view a full list of activities on the Discover Flagstaff website.

At-Home Winter Fun in Flagstaff

Traveling can be difficult for families, especially if you have a large family, young kids, or older adults who may need mobility assistance. Luckily, you can try plenty of fun winter activities without leaving the comfort of your home.

  • Movie marathon: Host a movie marathon with back-to-back features of your favorite films. Don’t forget the snacks!
  • Holiday-themed game night: The holidays might be over, but the season continues into January for many. If you have a competitive family, try hosting a holiday-themed game night. You can create teams and play various games to crown the ultimate winner. Check out this list of holiday games from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
  • Baking contest: Nothing says “comfort food” like homemade baked goods. Gather your family in the kitchen and enjoy an afternoon of baking your favorite treats. Do you have a senior loved one joining you? Make it extra special for them by whipping up some of their favorites.
  • Decorate the home: Just because the holidays have passed doesn't mean you can't keep your home feeling warm and festive for the winter season. Make decorating a family affair and encourage loved ones to get creative. You can even have everyone make decorations (think handmade snowflakes!) for a unique touch.
