Bath Safety Tips for Seniors
Millions of older adults 65 and older suffer a fall-related injury each year. These injuries can range from broken bones and sprained muscles to concussions and fractures. Falls can happen anywhere, but one of the most common places seniors fall at home is in the bathroom. January is National Bath Safety Month, making it the perfect time to learn about and practice bath safety tips for seniors.
Keep the Bathroom Clean
You want to have a clear path f to and from your toilet and shower. Try to keep clutter off the floor and away from doors to reduce your chances of tripping. You also want to keep your bathroom floors clean and dry so you have a safe and non-slippery surface to walk on.
Install Grab Bars
If you feel uncomfortable stepping in and out of your tub or needing extra support while standing, you may want to consider installing grab bars in your shower. Grab bars come in various sizes and styles and are great for helping you maneuver in the shower.
Sit While Showering
To avoid slipping while showering, take a shower sitting down. You can purchase a non-slip bench or chair to keep in your shower to will allow you to clean yourself more easily without having to bend over or move around in your tube.
Keep Everything Within Reach
When you’re standing or sitting in your shower, you should have everything within reach. Keep your soap, shampoo, and any other necessities in a caddy or basket at arm level so you don’t have to bend down or reach up to get what you need.
Use a Weighted Shower Curtain
Sometimes water from the shower can splash out and get on the floor, causing a slipping hazard. If you find there’s often water on the floor after you bathe, consider purchasing a weighted shower curtain. Weighted shower curtains create a seal against the base of the tub, keeping water inside the tub and off the floor.
Consider a Walk-In Tub
Some seniors have difficulty stepping in and out of their tubs. If you’re having trouble lifting your legs and feet to get into your shower, you may want to invest in a walk-in tub. Walk-in tubs are about chest high and have an easily accessible door to step in and out. Most walk-in tubs also come with a built-in seat, and some even have jets for a light massage during your bath.
