Caring for Caregivers: Support and Resources Offered During Alzheimer's Awareness Month
Did you know that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults? It’s also the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that almost seven million older adults are living with the disease, and that number is only expected to rise. This growing prevalence places a significant burden on families, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that approximately 16 million family caregivers are currently providing care for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s.
Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be incredibly stressful and exhausting for family caregivers. Fortunately, there are several resources and services available to help you along the way. In recognition of both National Family Caregivers Month and National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we’ve put together a list of local resources to help you find the support you need on your caregiving journey.
Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware Valley
The Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware Valley offers a wealth of resources and support for family caregivers. They offer both in-person and virtual support groups, care consultations, and seminars where family caregivers can connect, share their experiences, and receive practical support. Family caregivers can also sign up to participate in a Walk to End Alzheimer’s event which can help family caregivers promote self-care, pay tribute to their loved one living with the disease, and feel empowered as they take part in this community event.
Montgomery County Office of Aging & Adult Services
The Montgomery County Office of Aging & Adult Services provides a variety of support to seniors and their families. The agency can connect family caregivers to support groups and educational workshops where they can receive emotional support and learn caregiving strategies. In addition, the agency can connect family caregivers with other community resources, financial aid programs, and respite services.
Horsham Library
The Horsham Library is more than just a place to borrow books; it is a place where family caregivers can find additional information about issues and concerns seniors face, including Alzheimer’s disease. Check out the calendar of events for programs specifically related to Alzheimer’s care. While you’re there, don’t forget to ask a librarian for book recommendations. They can guide you to a selection of insightful books on Alzheimer’s, including practical guides, personal memoirs, and novels that offer both understanding and support, such as The 36-Hour Day and Still Alice.
Memory Cafes
Another resource family caregivers can turn to is this directory of Memory Cafes in Pennsylvania. Memory Cafes are unique social gatherings designed for seniors with memory loss and dementia. At the event, both senior and family caregivers can connect and engage in meaningful activities that are tailored to stimulate cognitive functioning. Most importantly, Memory Cafes provide a sense of community for both seniors and their family caregivers.
Dementia Friendly Pennsylvania
Yet another amazing and valuable organization family caregivers can turn to for support is Dementia Friendly Pennsylvania. This organization offers free training sessions designed to give a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia so that family caregivers can better empathize with what their loved one is experiencing. It also provides resources and educational events to help family caregivers enhance their caregiver approach through practical strategies. This support can make a significant difference in managing the challenges of Alzheimer’s care.
