Companion Care Vs Personal Care: Which Is Best For Me?
In six years, all members of the Baby Boomer generation will be 65 or older. This generation is one of the largest, and many of these individuals will need to consider their care options for senior living. A popular care option among seniors is at-home care, which allows individuals to age at home while receiving part-time or full-time assistance from a trained and compassionate caregiver.
Before you decide if at-home caregiving is for you, it’s important to understand your care options. At Visiting Angels, we offer various caregiving services to meet our client's needs. Our most popular services are companion care and personal care.
What Is Companion Care?
Companion care is our most basic form of at-home care. The primary goal of companion care is to provide companionship to our clients. Caregivers provide companionship by spending time with clients and engaging in their favorite activities.
Beyond companionship, caregivers ensure clients are safe and comfortable living at home, often alone. Caregivers can assist with nonmedical tasks like light housekeeping, cooking, and medication reminders. Caregivers can also provide transportation to doctor’s appointments and help clients run errands.
Companion care might be best for you if:
- You can care for yourself but need assistance with tasks like laundry or vacuuming
- You can no longer drive and need help with errands or appointments
- You often forget to take your medications
- You live alone and would like someone to spend time with you
What Is Personal Care?
Personal care provides the same things as companion care, such as light housekeeping and transportation, but with more hands-on assistance. Caregivers providing personal care help clients with more intimate tasks like showering, toileting, mobility, grooming, and dressing.
Personal care might be best for you if:
- You need help moving throughout your home
- You need help with tasks like dressing, showering, and grooming
- You were recently diagnosed with a condition that makes it difficult to care for yourself
- You live alone and need hands-on assistance with daily tasks.
