5 Summer Safety Tips for Caregivers

5 Summer Safety Tips for Caregivers

June is National Safety Month, an annual observation that promotes education and awareness about health and safety hazards employees face on the job site. While in-home caregiving isn’t a high-risk career, now is the perfect opportunity for caregivers to learn tips that will keep them safe all summer, both at and off work.

Keep reading to learn five summer safety tips to be prepared for whatever the season throws your way.

1. Check the Weather

Now that the weather is warmer and the days are longer, summer is an excellent time for outdoor adventures and getaways. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with your family, it’s always important to check the weather before heading out the door.

While summer temperatures aren’t dangerously high in Jenkintown, it’s still smart to pack plenty of water and suntan lotion. If the forecast calls for rain, keep a raincoat and umbrella handy.

2. Use Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen benefits people of every age. The simple act of slathering on sunscreen will keep you healthy now and in the future. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every 30 minutes or immediately after taking a dip.

Want to boost your UV protection? Wear long-sleeved, loose, light-colored clothing, sunglasses with 100% UV and UVA protection, and a wide-brimmed hat. These clothes and accessories are also tremendously beneficial to caregivers’ elderly clients.

3. Keep a First Aid Kit in Your Car

Many people may embark on long road trips during the summer. If you do, it’s essential to pack a first aid kit. This will keep you safe in the event of a breakdown.

Your first aid kit should contain:

  • Bandages
  • Gauze pads
  • Pain management medications
  • Tweezers
  • Adhesive tape
  • Antiseptic wipes

You should also carry jumper cables, flares, bottled water, and an extra phone charger in your vehicle.

4. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses

Heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, happen when your body can’t efficiently cool itself. This can lead to muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and other dangerous symptoms.

Avoid doing strenuous physical activity outside during extreme temperatures. If you start feeling unwell outdoors, immediately go inside and drink fluids. Applying a cold compress can also help reduce your body temperature. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

5. Practice Proper Water Safety Etiquette

Staying safe around water is essential, whether at the beach, lake, or pool. Never swim in areas unattended by lifeguards. Ensure someone is keeping a close eye on your kids at all times. And always be aware of your surroundings.
