What is Respite Care
What Exactly is Respite Care?
The definition of respite is “a short period of rest from something difficult or unpleasant”. Quite often a family caregiver (spouse, adult child, or other family member) will take on a disproportional role in providing care for their loved one. This could be out of necessity, but often is the result of either a sense of obligation, lack of family support, or even a martyr complex.
Should I get help?
In the vast majority of cases, most family caregivers need help in their caregiving role. But often don’t seek out help for a variety of reasons. These caregivers put themselves and the person they are caring for in danger by not getting assistance. Quite often the main caregiver’s health declines faster than the person they are taking care of. The main culprit for this STRESS. By receiving respite care, even if a day or two a week for a few hours can go a long way to keeping the caregiver mentally and physically healthy.
What should I do during my respite break?
The short answer is DO SOMETHING FUN. Go to lunch with a friend, maybe some shopping therapy, an afternoon with a grandchild, relaxing and reading a book in solitude, a walk in the park, etc.
Of course, a practical approach is often a good idea too for respite time off. Schedule a long put off appointment to a clinician, take your time to run some errands. Finish a home project you have not been able to complete.
