6 Summer Safety Tips for Seniors

6 Summer Safety Tips for Seniors

Summer in Colorado can be a wonderful time for seniors, but the hottest season of the year requires careful planning and precautions in order to stay safe. Each year, around 12,000 people die of heat-related causes in the U.S., and 80 percent of those deaths occur in individuals over the age of 60.

How Older Adults Can Stay Comfortable in Hot Weather

The average temperature in Loveland, CO for the month of July is 87 degrees, which makes it possible for older adults to develop a heat related illness in a very short amount of time. To remain cool and comfortable even when it’s scorching outside, we recommend the following 6 tips.

Hydration is Key

Be sure to consume plenty of liquids like water, juice, and drinks that contain electrolytes. Avoid drinking anything with caffeine or alcohol since those ingredients will make you urinate more, which can lead to dehydration.

Dress for the Weather

If you plan on spending time outside, dress in loose, light-colored clothing with breathable fabric, like cotton. Add a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses to minimize sun exposure.

Keep Your Space Cool

Keep air conditioning and fans in your home blowing consistently throughout the day. Close doors to rooms that you’re not using and seal any gaps around doors or windows so that cool air won’t escape. Make sure your blinds or curtains are closed during the day, but open your windows at night to create a cross breeze. If you start to feel warm, take a shower or bath in cool water, then be sure to rest.

Spend Time in Air Conditioning

If your home doesn’t have air conditioning, it’s important to find places that do on particularly hot days. Visit a friend who has AC, go to a movie, or stop by the Chilson Senior Center or Loveland Public Library to cool down.

Don’t Slack on Sun Protection

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 18 percent of older adults don’t use sun protection. Avoid painful sunburns and skin damage by using a broad spectrum sunscreen. Reapply it throughout the day if you plan on having prolonged exposure to the sun.

Talk to Your Doctor

Certain medications can make you more sensitive to heat, leading to heat-related illness or sunburns. Chat with your medical provider about these risks. If you start to feel nauseous or overheated after being outside, contact emergency services right away.
