Tips for Maintaining Ear Health

Tips for Maintaining Ear Health

As we age, our ears begin to lose some of their functioning. Since the ears have two jobs - hearing and maintaining balance - health problems can occur. You may find yourself stumbling more often or struggling to keep up with conversations.

Habits to Keep Ears Healthy as You Age

The good news is that potential ear issues can be mitigated by making a few simple lifestyle shifts. The following healthy habits will help keep your ears in good shape for years to come.

Get Regular Screenings

In the same way that you schedule an annual dental exam or eye doctor appointment, be sure to get a regular hearing screening conducted by your provider. They’ll be able to recognize any ear problems and deal with them in a timely manner to avoid further issues.

Be Gentle with Cleaning

Contrary to what many think, cotton swabs should never be inserted inside the ears. They can actually push earwax in further and may even cause damage to the eardrum. Instead, use a warm washcloth to gently clean the outside, and consult your doctor if you believe you have a wax build up that needs to be cleared.

Wear Ear Protection

Loud noises can damage parts of your inner ear, and they can’t be repaired once this happens. That’s why protecting your ears when participating in noisy activities, such as concerts, sporting events, and even using a saw, is always a good idea. There are multiple options for protection, including ear plugs or muffs. Additionally, you should never listen to music at maximum volume when wearing headphones.

Know Your Risk Factors

Many health conditions put you at a higher risk for hearing loss, including sleep apnea, diabetes, and high blood pressure. If you have a comorbidity, your doctor may recommend more frequent screenings. Certain medications also cause ear damage and may lead to tinnitus, hearing loss, or even a balance disorder. Discuss these risk factors with your provider before starting a new medication.

Don’t Smoke

Cigarettes can cause an array of health issues, but you may not have realized hearing loss is linked to smoking. In fact, smokers have a 70 percent higher chance of developing hearing loss compared to non-smokers.
