About Sutton MA

Officially the Town of Sutton, this small, rural town is located in Worcester County, Massachusetts, in the Blackstone Valley; it has been designated as a Preserve America community since 2004. 

Sutton is the birthplace of General Rufus Putnam, an American military officer who fought during the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. He was instrumental in the initial colonization of the lands in present-day Ohio and is known as the “Father of the Northwest Territory.” His cousin built one of the oldest homes in Sutton in 1737, the Edward Putnam House, which is featured on the town’s seal. Another cousin, Ann Putnam Jr., was an accuser during the Salem witch trials. 

There are seven sites in Sutton on the National Register of Historic Places: Blackstone Canal Historic District, First Baptist Church of Sutton, Freegrace Marble Farm Historic District, Manchaug Village Historic District, Sutton Center Historic District, Waters Farm, and the West Sutton Historic District. 

Although not designated a historic place, the Sutton Free Public Library was established in 1876 with a mission of facilitating lifelong learning by connecting people to informational, cultural, recreational, and technical resources.
