The Benefits of Walking for Seniors

The Benefits of Walking for Seniors

If you want to stay healthy through your senior years, walking is one of the best ways to achieve that goal. Studies show that exercising can have a big impact on both our physical and emotional health.

Why Older Adults Should Go on a Daily Walk

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. This physical activity doesn’t have to be complicated- go for a stroll around the neighborhood or hike at one of Newberg’s beautiful park trails to enjoy the following benefits.

Lowers Your Risk of Disease

The CDC also shows that walking has been shown to significantly decrease your overall chances of contracting chronic conditions, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, and hypertension. Plus, physical activity has been linked with improving memory and may even reduce the chances of developing dementia.

Decreases Joint Pain

If you or your senior loved one has arthritis, walking will protect your joints by providing lubrication and strengthening muscles. The activity has also been shown to prevent osteoporosis because it improves your bone density. Just make sure you wear a high quality running shoe while you walk to further support joint health.

Gives Your Immune System a Boost

Seniors are especially susceptible to catching viruses during cold and flu season. Who knew that walking improves your body’s ability to fight off infection? One study showed people who walked every day for at least twenty minutes experienced over 40 percent fewer sick days than those who didn’t.

Reduces Stress and Tension

Need to relax? Take a walk! Exercise is a great way to relieve stress in the moment and long-term. Additionally, the energy you get from regular physical activity helps you feel clearer and more mentally focused.

Improves Sleep

Seniors often struggle with insomnia and other sleep disorders. Studies have shown that walking helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The results are usually pretty immediate, so go for a long walk today and you can expect better quality sleep as soon as tonight.

How to Stay Safe While Walking

  • Stay alert. Keep the volume low on your headphones or wear one earbud so you can be aware of cars and other hazards.
  • Only walk in familiar areas. It’s easy to get turned around when exploring a new neighborhood.
  • Bring a friend, family member, or caregiver along, particularly if you have mobility or health issues.
  • Know your limits and listen to your body. If you notice any foot, leg, back, or knee pain, don’t push yourself. Contact your doctor right away to figure out the cause.
