Tips for Navigating Indiana Winters as a Senior

Tips for Navigating Indiana Winters as a Senior

Winter in Northern Central Indiana brings inclement weather and freezing temps that can create challenges for older adults. The National Library of Medicine reports that 63 percent of weather-related deaths are due to prolonged exposure to the cold. For seniors who have difficulty regulating their body temperature, these months are particularly risky.

Cold Weather Strategies for Indiana Seniors

In addition to the cold, it’s crucial for older adults to consider other hazards, like falls and power outages. Here are several key protections seniors should take to stay healthy and comfortable during the winter months.

Prep Your Home

Weather-proofing your home before temps plummet is essential to staying safe. If you haven’t had your furnace checked in a while, it’s probably time for an inspection. Once you’re sure the heating system is running efficiently, set the temperature to at least 68 degrees. Even mildly chilly homes that are set between 60-65 degrees can lead to hypothermia. If you’re concerned about heating costs, contact the Indiana Energy Assistance Program for help.

Dress for Warmth

When venturing outside, wear suitable clothing and dress in layers. Start with a pair of thermal underwear, then put on a sweater, thick pants, a heavy coat with a hood, and a hat. You can also add wool socks, ear warmers, and a scarf for added protection.

Avoid Falls

Slippery winter surfaces drastically increase your odds of taking a tumble. While gearing up to head outdoors, be sure to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes to prevent accidents. If you struggle with mobility, use a cane or walker with ice grip attachments. Consider hiring a professional to remove snow in your driveway and on sidewalks to make walking less treacherous.

Stay Connected

Social connection is especially important during the long winter months. Winter weather can limit the amount you’re able to leave the house, but it’s possible to stay in touch with your loved ones virtually. Make a point of scheduling regular video chats or having friends and family visit when possible.

Have an Emergency Plan

Winter storms that are capable of causing power outages are fairly common in Northern Central Indiana. Take some time to develop a readiness plan in case the worst happens. This can be as simple as stocking up on extra medical supplies, bottled water, and non-perishable food. It’s also a good idea to have a list of emergency contacts available that includes people in your neighborhood.

Prevent the Winter Blues

Short days and dark nights can lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder. To avoid developing seasonal depression, maintain a regular routine, get plenty of rest, and continue to eat healthy foods.
