Highlighting World Alzheimer’s Month Awareness

Highlighting World Alzheimer’s Month Awareness

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, which began as a tradition in 2012. Purple ribbons help distinguish World Alzheimer’s Month and World Alzheimer’s Day, which is September 21, 2023. During September, many organizations and communities come together to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s, including dispelling myths, changing perceptions, and stressing the need for public knowledge to help reduce risks associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The theme of World Alzheimer’s Month in 2023 is “Never too early, never too late.” This year’s efforts are focused on reducing the risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s. Many people mistake symptoms of dementia for natural aging, but that’s far from the truth.

How Alzheimer’s Affects Americans

A whopping 6 million Americans live with Alzheimer's, while 50 million people worldwide struggle with this disease. This number is set to triple by 2050. Scientists have yet to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, but research has uncovered several drug and non-drug therapies that can help slow the effects of this debilitating disease.

Alzheimer’s is just one form of dementia. Common types of dementia include:

  • Vascular dementia
  • Lewy Body Disease
  • Frontotemporal dementia
  • Young-onset dementia

Dementia primarily affects older people, specifically those over the age of 65. In this age group, 1 in 20 develop a form of dementia. Upon turning 80 years old, the number increases to 1 in 5. The prevalence of dementia diagnoses can be frightening, but you can easily find widespread support, especially during September.

Recognizing the Symptoms and Risk Factors Associated with Alzheimer’s

World Alzheimer’s Day helps create awareness about Alzheimer’s and aims to connect those at risk and their families with access to helpful resources. Therapies, treatment, and support can help maximize overall quality of life, plan for the future, and allow for deeper connections between friends and family.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia include:

  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty performing routine tasks
  • Problems with communication
  • Changes in mood and personality
  • Withdrawal
  • Poor judgment
  • Disorientation
  • Object misplacement

Alzheimer’s can affect everyone differently. If you think a senior loved one might be at risk for dementia or Alzheimer’s, contact a physician to discuss your concerns. Early diagnosis can help minimize the effects of Alzheimer’s and provide support for changes to come.
