Practical Strategies for Self-Care Routines as a Caregiver
In honor of Self-Care Awareness Month, Visiting Angels of Toms River would like to take this opportunity to thank caregivers nationwide for their service and encourage these same caregivers to take a moment for themselves this month to reflect on their needs and work toward their goals. If you struggle to incorporate self-care into your routine as a caregiver, please read about the strategies below. Make it a personal goal to prioritize self-care this September, even if it’s just through one act of self-kindness.
5 Strategies to Add Self-Care to Your Daily Routine
The best self-care acts begin with intention. Which of the following self-care activities can you add to your daily routine this month?
1. Set Aside Time to Journal
Getting your thoughts down on paper can help you work through problems, practice gratitude, or even vent your frustrations. Take a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts and share your struggles. If anything, it gets them out of your mind and into a place where you can work on handling them.
2. Lean On Your Faith Community
If there’s anyone you can lean on when it comes to trying times, your faith community is that resource. Regardless of your beliefs, sometimes the answers you seek are within religious teachings or practices. Chances are, someone in your community has also gone through what you’re going through and can give you guidance on what to do next.
3. Exercise
Movement can help regulate our emotions and help our bodies destress from the day. Establish an exercise routine you do in the morning before you go to work or after work when you get home. The exercises themselves don’t matter as much as how that time benefits you, mentally and physically.
4. Prioritize Healthy Foods
Eating healthy foods will do more to keep you at your best than you might realize. Although sleep is just as important, the foods you eat help nourish your body and prepare it for the road ahead. Skip that fast food drive-thru this month and treat yourself to a healthy meal that gives back to your body. Better yet, if you can manage the time, try food prepping so you always have a stash of healthier meal options at home, ready to eat.
5. Set Personal Goals
Self-care means putting yourself first. Setting a goal that means something to you is often the best way to demonstrate care for your well-being. Whether it’s accomplishment-related, requires a trip outside of your typical environment, or means stepping outside of your comfort zone, a personal goal can give you the satisfaction of working toward and accomplishing something you care about.
