Keep Your Senior Loved One Cool this Summer

So far, the temperatures this summer have been HOT … and the forecast is more of the same, so we had better get used to it!

Unfortunately, for seniors, “getting used to it” is not an option as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. For this reason, making sure that your senior loved one is well-hydrated and protected from the heat is absolutely critical for their well-being.

In this article, we will share some tips to help keep your senior cool this summer, as well as a list of the signs you should watch for that might indicate heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Tips to Keep Cool:

  1. Drink plenty of water. In hot weather, dehydration can happen quickly, so it’s important that your senior drinks plenty of water throughout the day. Eating water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables can also help your loved one stay hydrated.
  2. Wear a hat and dress appropriately. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can provide shade, protecting your loved one from direct sunlight; have them choose loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made from natural fibers like cotton to help keep their body cool.
  3. Close the blinds. Keep the curtains and blinds closed during the hot afternoons and use fans as needed to keep cool.
  4. Avoid going outdoors. Staying indoors when it is hot outside is recommended. If your loved one must go outdoors, try to go outside in the morning or evening when it is a little cooler and have them sit in the shade.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses

Of course, no matter how many precautions you take, your senior is still at risk of becoming overheated in the summer. That’s why it's so important to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Cold, pale, and clammy skin
  • Muscle cramps

If your loved one is presenting with any of these symptoms, have them sip water and get them into a cooler place ASAP. Applying cool, wet washcloths can also help. If their symptoms worsen or do not improve, seek medical attention.

Symptoms of heat stroke include:

  • High body temperature (above 103°F)
  • Hot, red, dry, or damp skin
  • Rapid and strong pulse
  • Confusion or altered mental state
  • Unconsciousness

Heat stroke is a medical emergency! If your senior has any of these symptoms, you should call 911 immediately!
