Staying Social in Punta Gorda

Staying Social in Punta Gorda

Social isolation and loneliness are growing concerns for older adults across the United States. Social isolation, a lack of connection, can lead to loneliness. Research finds that loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease, dementia, stroke, anxiety, and depression.

Many factors can contribute to a person’s social isolation and loneliness, including physical health and access to community. However, like other aspects of your well-being, social health is something you can work on and improve.

Take Neighborhood Walks

One of the easiest ways to connect with your community is to walk through your neighborhood. Getting outside and enjoying your place can help you feel more connected to your home, especially if you’re new to Punta Gorda or the Florida area.

While walking, don’t be shy about interacting with others who are also enjoying the outdoors. Stop to say hello to neighbors, introduce yourself, or ask to pet someone’s dog. You’ll be surprised how many neighbors are willing to engage.

Talk To People You See

People interact with others almost every day, but we don’t always take the time to engage with the people we meet. Take a moment to talk to the people you see daily, whether a barista at your favorite coffee shop or the cashier at your grocery store. These interactions may seem small and only last a moment, but they can make all the difference if you feel disconnected or isolated from your community.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to engage with your community and a rewarding way to build purpose and meet new people. Many people envision volunteering as working at a shelter. And while helping at shelters is a wonderful volunteer opportunity, it’s not the only option for giving back.

Punta Gorda has many nonprofits and organizations you can work with based on your knowledge, interests, and skill set. You can start a community garden with TEAM Punta Gorda, help rehabilitate parrots with the Parrot Outreach Society, or assist with building safe and affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity

Schedule Virtual Hangouts

One of the main contributing factors to social isolation and loneliness is seniors' inability to leave their homes due to illness or mobility limitations. Technology has come a long way in recent years, making it possible to hang out with loved ones without being in the same physical space.

Consider scheduling virtual hangouts via video chat instead of planning in-person meetups with loved ones. Video chats are an easy way to see your friends and family without coordinating the details of meeting in person.

Hire A Professional Caregiver

Working with a professional caregiver can be a great option for seniors who cannot leave their homes or have limitations that make it challenging to connect with others in their community.

At Visiting Angels, we offer companion care services, which allow our clients to connect with our team of compassionate caregivers through home visits. Caregivers are there to engage in activities, spend time with clients, and help them live the quality of lives they deserve. Caregivers can also assist with basic household tasks like housekeeping, cooking, medication reminders, and mobility assistance.

Contact our Punta Gorda office to learn more about at-home care services with Visiting Angels.
