Summer Activities to Do With Seniors in Rockford

Summer Activities to Do With Seniors in Rockford

Summer gives us the perfect chance to get outdoors and spend time with our senior loved ones. While it can be tough to find activities that appeal to every member of your family, the Rockford area is full of opportunities for fun.

5 Ideas for Summer Fun with Your Loved One

Socializing is so important for older adults in order to maintain their physical and mental well being. Here are 5 exciting ideas for experiences you can share with your senior loved one in Rockford this summer.

Visit the Botanical Gardens

There’s nothing like a tranquil stroll through nature to enhance your mood. Older adults will enjoy an afternoon at Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens viewing orchids, tropical plants, and exotic butterflies. Seniors and veterans enjoy a special discount while visiting Nicholas.

Attend a Free Outdoor Concert

Spend an evening with your family at beautiful Sinnissippi Park, enjoying the talents of local artists. The Music in the Park outdoor concert series takes place every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday through mid-August. Be sure to pack chairs and blankets so everyone can watch the concert comfortably on cool summer nights.

Stroll Through City Market

Every Friday night through the end of September, downtown Rockford comes alive with the sights and sounds of City Market. Over 70 vendors are featured at the weekly event, offering produce, jewelry, apparel, a tasty array of food items, and much more. There’s also free live music from 4-8:30 pm throughout the summer, and plenty of shaded areas for families to relax.

Watch a Show Under the Stars

If your senior loved one enjoys live theater, Rockford’s Starlight Theater puts on spectacular performances every summer. This year, Starlight’s impressive schedule includes the Broadway classic “Guys and Dolls” and the Tony award-winning musical “The Color Purple.” Seniors receive reduced admission at the theater.

Have a Picnic at the State Park

There’s no better place to appreciate nature than Rock Cut State Park. This peaceful park has plenty of picnic spots to use and outdoor stoves and tables are available at each spot. After lunch, take a gentle hike on one of Rock Cut’s easy trails, rent a paddleboat, or simply unwind in a shady spot next to the lake.
