Staying Safe In The Heat

Staying Safe In The Heat

Excessive heat can be dangerous to people of all ages, but it’s particularly concerning for seniors. Seniors often have a higher risk for heat-related conditions, especially those with heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, or taking prescription medications, that can make it challenging for the body to cool.

The good news is that you can take many steps and precautions to ensure you’re safe in the heat this summer.

Heat-Related Safety Concerns

When the temperature rises, it’s important to know the signs and symptoms of common heat-related conditions

  • Dehydration is when your body loses more fluids than you're taking in. You're more susceptible to dehydration in the summer because you can lose a lot of fluid through sweat.
  • Heat exhaustion occurs when the body becomes too dehydrated. The loss of fluids can result in headaches, nausea, thirst, and dizziness.
  • Heat stroke is a serious heat-related concern when the body can no longer regulate its temperature. Heat stroke can happen if heat exhaustion is not treated and may result in confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, or even death.

Tips For Staying Cool

There may be a few health and safety concerns to consider in summer, but there are simple steps you can take to keep yourself cool from the heat.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water throughout the day is the best way to prevent dehydration. Everyone's specific hydration needs will vary but try to drink water consistently throughout the day, especially if you're spending time outdoors.

Beyond drinking water, you also want to ensure you're getting enough electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium and potassium that allow your body to retain water. You can get electrolytes from enhanced waters or sports drinks, as well as from foods like bananas and avocados.

Wear Breathable Attire

Aside from drinking plenty of water, you can keep cool by wearing light, breathable clothing. Breathable attire helps regulate your body temperature, especially when you spend time outdoors on a hot day. You can try any cotton and linen apparel, both lightweight fabrics that won't weigh you down if you sweat.

Keep Your Home Cool

Your home is your sanctuary. It should be a place to relax and feel comfortable, even in the heat. To ensure you don't overheat, try to keep your home around 70 degrees. If you don't have central air, you can keep your home cool with window unit air conditioners or fans.

Running air conditioners and fans can be expensive. If you're unable to keep your home at a comfortable temperature during hot days, consider spending time at a cooling station to cool down.
