Travel Safety Tips for Seniors

Travel Safety Tips for Seniors

Whether you’re visiting friends and family or exploring a new location, traveling is a fun and worthwhile experience, particularly for seniors. However, travel poses unique challenges for older adults, so taking precautions and prepping ahead of time are essential.

Helpful Advice for a Safe Summer Vacation

As you prepare for summer travel, be sure to prioritize your health and safety. The following tips will help ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Pack Light (but smart)

Strategic packing will help make your travel experience easier. Stay up-to-date on the weather forecast for your destination so you can plan outfits accordingly. Packing lightweight shoes and clothing will keep your suitcase easy to move around. Be sure to include medications, with their prescriptions, and any supplements, as well as a copy of your insurance card. If you’re flying, include a book or e-reader, snacks, and a neck pillow to enhance your comfort level on the airplane.

Follow Health Precautions

While the Covid 19 pandemic is no longer at its peak, many seniors are still contracting the virus, along with other contagious illnesses.

Protect yourself from germs and stay healthy by consulting your doctor ahead of travel.

Get a Covid or flu booster shot if recommended by your physician, carry hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes, and consider wearing a face mask in crowded areas. You should also stretch your legs often to avoid blood clots, particularly when traveling by plane. Stay hydrated while on the road or flying by bringing along a hydro flask and avoid potential food poisoning by staying away from raw veggies, fruits, meat, and seafood.

Request Air Travel Assistance

Many airlines offer free travel assistance- take advantage of it to avoid pushing yourself too much. Select the disability or special assistance option when booking your flight or contact the airline ahead of time. You can typically request assistance on the way to your gate, on the aircraft, at connections, and when you arrive at your final destination.

Use Tech to Stay Connected

Keep your cell phone charged at all times, and bring a battery pack along for long trips. Your phone is essential for viewing flight status notifications, contacting emergency services, and updating loved ones while traveling.

Protect Your Belongings

Older adults are often prime targets for theft. Protect yourself while en route and once you reach the place you’re staying. Most hotels have safes where you can store jewelry and other valuables. It’s also a good idea to invest in clothing that deters thieves, such as pants with secret compartments and an RFID blocking purse or backpack.
