3 Skincare Tips for Seniors

3 Skincare Tips for Seniors

Proper skin care is essential at any age, and it’s never too late to start developing healthier habits. As we age, our skin starts to lose its collagen, making it thinner. Mature skin also becomes more brittle since its sebaceous glands cannot hydrate it efficiently.

Several factors contribute to changes in our skin condition as we age, including heredity, lifestyle, diet, sun exposure, and sleep positions.

These changes can cause dryness, itchiness, and slower healing processes. Because of its thinness, seniors’ skin is also much more vulnerable to sunburn.

Caring for Mature Skin: Essential Tips

Older adults must treat their skin with extra TLC to prevent these issues. Use these three skincare tips to keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and safe.

1. Always Wear Sunscreen

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), less than half of seniors protect their skin from the sun. If you’re spending time outside, wear sunscreen. Generously apply broad-spectrum suntan lotion with an SPF of 50 or higher. Be sure to apply sunscreen to all areas of your body, including your nose, neck, back, ears, feet, and hands. Reapply it every hour, or after you go swimming.

For additional protection, while you’re at the beach or pool, wear a wide-brimmed hat and large sunglasses with a UV 400 rating. Wear loose, breathable, light-colored fabrics to shield your skin from dangerous UV rays.

2. Be Mindful of Your Skincare Routine

Simply splashing cold water on your face before bed doesn’t cut it anymore. Older adults must follow a healthy skincare routine to feel their best.

Avoid quickly and vigorously scrubbing with scalding-hot water and a sponge when washing. Use a soft cloth and moisturizing body wash. Wash with warm water. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils. This can lead to dryness and flakiness.

Seniors should also regularly moisturize. Use ointment for areas of the body that are extremely dry. If you have sensitive skin, look for fragrance-free lotions. These won’t irritate your skin as much as moisturizers with perfume.

Lastly, hydrate your skin from the inside out. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. You can also eat water-rich foods, like watermelons, strawberries, and oranges. If you wake up with dry skin, use a humidifier in your bedroom. Keeping your indoor humidity at around 45% to 65% reduces dryness.

3. Visit A Dermatologist Annually

Make an appointment with your dermatologist at least once per year. They can inspect your body for signs of skin damage. Staying one step ahead of potential problems reduces your risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancer.
