5 Mental Health Tips for Seniors

5 Mental Health Tips for Seniors

June was Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, an annual month-long observance that promotes awareness about the importance of men’s mental health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while women were diagnosed with depression twice as much as men, men have four times higher suicide death rates.

As such, it’s important for elderly males to prioritize their mental health and not be ashamed to ask for help when help is needed.

Tips for Older Adults to Support Mental Health

Here are five actionable steps senior men can take to support their mental and emotional well-being.

1. Maintain an Active Social Network

Older adults are more prone to feelings of isolation and loneliness. That’s why it’s crucial for them to maintain an active social life. Men can invite friends over to watch sports, schedule weekly Zoom calls with their family, or enjoy a dinner with their spouse.

Want to meet new, like-minded people? Consider volunteering, joining a senior-centric fitness program, or enrolling in a class or workshop. Try the Greater Scranton YMCA for a group fitness class.

2. Participate in Meaningful Pastimes

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) reported that people who engage in personally meaningful activities are happier. These hobbies can also ward off cognitive decline.

Find a hobby or activity that fuels your passion and inspiration. Try woodworking, playing a musical instrument, or joining a sports league. Bowling, ping pong, and shuffleboard are fun leagues senior men can consider joining.

Want to discover your new favorite pastime? Call your favorite local senior center or community college to find out what courses they offer.

3. Move Your Body

Your physical health is intrinsically linked to your mental and emotional well-being. It’s essential that seniors stay active. The NIH recommends that older adults get at least 150 minutes or 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity weekly exercise.

Some great exercises for elderly men to try include:

  • Tai Chi
  • Lifting light weights
  • Walking or hiking
  • Yoga
  • Balancing exercises

If you have painful chronic health conditions or mobility issues, consider physical therapy as an alternative.

4. Understand the Symptoms of Mental Health Issues

Some seniors may not be able to recognize the symptoms of mental health issues. Some of the most common signs of mental health conditions include:

  • Stress, anxiety, or worry
  • Changes in energy, mood, or appetite
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Irritability and anger
  • Obsessive thinking
  • Feelings of loneliness, sadness, or hopelessness
  • Stomach pain and digestive issues
  • Risky behavior, including reckless driving or spending

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, book an appointment with a mental health professional.

5. Ask for Help

There is no shame in asking for help. If you are experiencing depression or anxiety, talk to a counselor or join a support group.
