Ways to Frolic this Fall With Your Senior Loved Ones
You can feel it in the air. Fall is coming. As if the cooler temperatures aren’t enough of a sign, the bright colors peaking from the trees are a tell-tale sign. It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year, and it calls for enjoyment. Don’t let your senior loved ones miss out on some of the wonders of fall. No matter their abilities, there is fun to be had, and plenty of ways to frolic this fall with your senior loved one.
Seek Out the Colors
The peak fall colors come in waves throughout Indiana. Find out when they’re going to hit your favorite scenic locale and plan a trip. You can walk, you can drive - just get out there and enjoy the colors before the leaves fall.
If your senior loved one is up for a walk, find a spot with somewhat smooth terrain. You know best what their abilities are. If they are up for a rugged walk, pick a spot with some hiking involved. If they’re just up for a short trip out of the car down a paved path, find one like that.. Maybe they just even want to walk around the block, or sit in their backyard beneath the changing trees. Finding the colors can be as simple as that.
If they can sit in the car for a longer drive, there are several scenic routes throughout the state that are perfectly made for a fall day. Some have spots where you pull over, stretch your legs and get a snapshot of your senior and the beauty in nature.
Grab Some Pumpkins
Whether your senior loved one is up for a hayride out to a field to pick pumpkins, or would rather you grab them from the local supermarket, incorporate them somehow into your fall fun. Pumpkins are a sure sign of fall, and can brighten an often dreary fall landscape. If your senior wants to carve them, help ensure they can do so safely. Another, somewhat safer option, is to paint the pumpkins with a fun design or even their name. Pumpkins can also just be used as is to decorate the home. They come in all shapes and even different colors. Grab some gourds too, and make a fall display with them.
Cook Up Some Fun
Fall has so many distinct flavors and dishes. Have some fun this fall with your senior as you cook and bake together. You can use some of the tastier parts of your pumpkins to make breads, pies and even soup. Throughout the fall, various types of apples ripen. Choose a different kind of apple to bake with each week, and make apple crisps, pies or apple cider donuts. If you’re up for a challenge, you can press the apples into cider. For more savory dishes, get some fresh spices and herbs and make a big pot of chili to stay warm with his fall. Another fall treat is fresh squash, cooked how you like for a favorite fall dinner dish.
Cozy Up
As the temperatures turn colder, have fall fun inside with your senior loved one. Grab a cozy blanket, and watch some fall-themed movies or TV shows. A beloved favorite is “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” Turn on the football game, and cheer on your favorite team for fall ball. In addition to watching television, find a fall-themed jigsaw puzzle and finish it together throughout the fall days. Print out some coloring sheets featuring autumn scenes, and color them along with your senior.
Decorate For The Season
Deck out the home for fall. Bring some of that fall magic inside, so they can enjoy the scenery all season long. Make it Halloween-ready for trick or treaters, and sit by the door together as they come on Halloween night looking for candy. You can even make decorations together. Grab some colorful leaves outside for your senior. Press them between pieces of wax paper, and decorate the front door with them.
