Self-Care Beyond Bubble Baths: Practical Tips for Caregivers
September is Self-Care Awareness Month, an annual month-long observation that encourages us to recognize the importance of self-care. While putting ourselves before others is sometimes essential, in-home caregivers might struggle to do so. Selfless to their core, caregivers often put their needs on the back burner to care for their loved ones and clients.
But sometimes this characteristic trait can lead home care providers to becoming overwhelmed with emotional, physical, and mental stress- something known as caregiver burnout. To keep this serious condition at bay, it’s so crucial for caregivers to prioritize their own self-care.
Caring for Caregivers: Strategies for Self-Care
September is a wonderful opportunity for caregivers to implement more self-care routines into their daily lives. Are you craving some more “me time?” If so, here are five practical self-care tips for Southwest OKC caregivers – and caregivers everywhere – to try during Self-Care Awareness Month and all year long.
1. Practice Mindfulness
Many of us can be consumed by guilt from the past or fears of the future. This erodes the joy of living in the present moment. Mindfulness is a practice that teaches us to live in and enjoy the here and now. It also has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety.
Try practicing mindfulness exercises in the morning. Focus on your breath and the sensations of your body. Practicing mindfulness for just five minutes can help you start the day on the right foot.
2. Engage in Meaningful Hobbies
When was the last time you participated in a hobby that brought you absolute joy? Whether you love painting, jogging, or playing a musical instrument, fulfilling hobbies can lift your mood and add meaning to your daily life. It also gives you something to look forward to.
Consider enrolling in a class or workshop that supports your passions. You can also meet like-minded people, expanding your social circle.
- The two senior activity centers run by the city of Oklahoma offer a full calendar of classes and programs to partake in.
- The YMCA Healthy Living Center in Oklahoma City is dedicated to older adults age 50 and up. This space provides a walking track, swimming pool, fitness studios, and more (even a library) for members to enjoy.
3. Develop a Sleep Routine
Busy days, hectic schedules, and racing thoughts can make it difficult to wind down before bed. Developing a pre-bedtime routine helps to relax your mind and body, lulling you into a deeper night’s sleep. Unplug a few hours before bed and avoid the temptation to use any devices. Instead, read a chapter of a good book or meditate.
4. Show Gratitude
It can be challenging to focus on all of the positive aspects of our lives. Practicing gratitude allows us to hone in on everything that makes our lives meaningful and brings us joy. Every night before you go to bed, jot down three things that you are thankful for. It doesn’t matter how big or small they are. You can be grateful for something as simple as the bus being on time or gorgeous weather.
5. Nourish Your Body
While it may sound obvious, many caregivers might neglect their physical health. Eating nutritious meals, exercising, avoiding unhealthy habits, and giving yourself time to relax and unwind are the pillars of a good self-care routine.
