Common Senior Allergies

Common Senior Allergies

As we age, our bodies go through changes that affect our immune system. Unfortunately, this can result in seniors experiencing allergic reactions for the first time in their life.

4 Types of Allergens to Know About This Summer

Summer is a popular time for allergic reactions because we’re more likely to spend time outdoors, where many allergens are found. Here’s what you need to know about recognizing and treating the following 4 allergies during this busy season.

Insect Bites

According to AARP, nearly 2 million people in the United States are allergic to bug bites. Bees, wasps, fire ants, and hornets are most to blame. If you notice a lot of pain, swelling, redness, or hives after being stung by an insect, contact your medical provider right away.

Treatment: Use insect repellents whenever you plan on being outside. If you know you’re allergic to a particular insect, make sure to carry an epi pen when on the go.

Hay Fever

Grass, trees, and weeds are common triggers for allergic reactions in those living in the Tacoma area throughout the summer. Sneezing, congestion, coughing, and itchy eyes, nose, and throat are the most prevalent symptoms.

Treatment: Wash your hands and face after being outside for long periods of time, as pollen can collect on your body. Nasal spray or over the counter allergy pills can be effective in treating symptoms, but always consult your doctor before taking any new medications.

Contact Dermatitis

Skin disorders become more of a concern as we age because skin becomes thinner and drier over time. It’s not unusual for an older person to suddenly develop sensitivities to chemicals found in soaps and lotions or nickel, which is in some jewelry. Additionally, Pacific Poison Oak causes an allergic skin rash and can be found in much of Western Washington. Skin allergies often cause redness, itching, and swelling.

Treatment: Avoid scratching skin since that will make the condition worse.Use a topical ointment that reduces inflammation or take an antihistamine. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any painful or persistent rashes.

Medications

Older adults typically take medications on a much more frequent basis than younger people, so it’s not surprising that seniors often experience allergic reactions to drugs. Antibiotics, insulin, ibuprofen, and anti-seizure medicines are common culprits and can cause itching, rashes, and respiratory distress.

Treatment: Consult your physician right away to determine if an alternative medication could be used.
