Dementia Visits: Helpful Tips for a Positive Experience

Visiting a family member with a memory-related condition can be unpredictable. You have no way of knowing if your loved one will recognize you or what kind of mood they may be in that day. That’s why it’s essential to prepare in advance of your visit.

Tips for a Smooth Visit with a Person with Dementia

It is possible to have a pleasant visit with your family member with dementia. To make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone involved, we recommend the following ideas.

Pick a Good Time to Visit

Your loved one likely has a time of day where they are more lucid and less tired. Plan your visit around this time block, and only stay for a short duration to avoid overwhelming them. You should also try to be in a quiet, comfortable environment free from background noises when you’re with them.

Prepare Yourself

Your relative’s condition may have changed drastically since you last saw them. It’s a good idea to prepare both mentally and emotionally for the visit, and set realistic expectations. They may become confused, agitated, or even angry at times. Keep your tone upbeat to create a positive atmosphere.

Have Clear Communication

Even if your loved one has had no problem recognizing who you are in the past, you should still introduce yourself and state the reason why you’re there. For example, say, “Hi (their name), it’s (your name). I am here to visit you today.” Use clear, easy to understand words and speak slowly. Allow plenty of time for them to comprehend what you’re saying.

Show Affection

Human touch is incredibly healing. Ask them for permission, then give your loved one a soft pat on the back, a comforting hug, or hold their hand. Be sure to look them in the eyes while you’re chatting, which can help give them a sense of security and reassurance.

Listen

People with dementia often experience a different version of reality. They may believe that a dead relative is still alive or that they are living in a different time and place. It does you no good to disagree or correct them. Remain open, patient, and empathetic if they choose to share their thoughts and feelings.

Do an Activity Together

Engage your loved one in a meaningful activity, but start by asking them how they would like to spend your time together. This helps them retain their independence, as well as boosts their self esteem. Looking at old family photos can help trigger happy memories, while art and music-based activities can be therapeutic and beneficial for cognitive functioning.
