Exploring Westchester County with Seniors

Exploring Westchester County with Seniors

As we age, our mobility and various medical conditions can limit our activities. However, embracing aging in place can help stave off social isolation and maintain a higher quality of life. Seniors in Westchester County can take advantage of the following activities to connect with their community and explore what the world has to offer.

10 Things Seniors Can Do in Westchester County

Discovering Westchester County can be a wonderful experience for seniors. While some activities may not be suitable for everyone depending on individual health conditions, discussing these options with your aging loved one can help identify the most enjoyable and feasible outings. Consider these locations and activities to see which ones spark their interest and enthusiasm.

1. Shop at the White Plains Farmers Market

Local farmers’ markets can give seniors access to foods and wares not typically available for sale. Speaking to the individuals selling their products can also present an opportunity for seniors to connect with their community and even learn something new. The next time you get a chance, stop by the White Plains Farmers Market to see what’s for sale.

2. Tour Lyndhurst Mansion

The Lyndhurst Mansion holds several spectacular tours throughout the year, from the classic mansion tour to touring the mansion’s bowling alley to exploring the 67-acre estate.

3. Visit the Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, the Neuberger Museum of Art features unique exhibitions and plenty of artwork to view at your leisure. Featured artists include Georgia O’Keeffe, Romare Bearden, and Edward Hopper.

4. View a Show at the White Plains Performing Arts Center

The White Plains Performing Arts Center hosts a variety of shows year-round. It’s a great spot to visit if you enjoy catching a show at one of the most professional spots in Westchester County.

5. Explore the Tarrytown Lighthouse

The Tarrytown Lighthouse, also called the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse or Kingsland Point Light, was built in 1883. While it’s no longer operational, it’s a historical sight to see.

6. Experience the New Rochelle Opera

Opera is alive and well at the New Rochelle Opera, where various productions use music to engage thoughts about life and how we experience it. Explore the world of opera at the New Rochelle Opera.

7. Attend the Beethoven Festival

Fans of Beethoven will love the Beethoven Festival at the Yonkers Philharmonic. This festival is a must if you’re into classical music and want to experience the power of Beethoven first-hand.

8. Learn about The John Jay Homestead

The John Jay Homestead preserves a slice of history in New York. Although the Bedford House is currently under restoration construction, you can virtually tour it to travel back in time.

9. Join the Community at the Carver Center

The Carver Center brings together the local community to celebrate dignity, integrity, inclusion, growth, leadership, and collaboration. It’s also a four-star charity, according to the Charity Navigator.

10. Catch a Performance at the Untermyer Gardens

The Untermyer Gardens have a rich past tied to Greystone, the estate upon which the gardens live. These vast gardens also host the 2024 Minnie Untermyer Performance Series, with several acts scheduled from June through September.
