Fun Summer Activities for the Whole Family
Summer is in full swing and Visiting Angels serving Westchester County knows that our senior clients enjoy spending time with their loved ones, even more so in the warmer weather! While our clients may not be able to do all they once could, there are still many ways they can enjoy the summer with family and friends. We want to make planning fun and safe summer activities easy for you and your families. We've put together a list of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy!
Summer fun activities to enjoy
Buy a coloring book. - This activity may seem like a blast back to your childhood, but recently it's grown in popularity in the adult community. Coloring has been proven to reduce anxiety and relax the brain due to your brain focusing on one simple task. To get this started, go to a local store, or hop online, and browse their book section. You're bound to find plenty of coloring books for you and your senior loved ones to work through. Once you're done, you can even swap your artwork for a keepsake. This would make for a great afternoon indoor activity on a hot summer day.
Enjoy the sunset from a new location. - Who doesn't love a beautiful sunset? Not only is this activity relaxing, but it also provides a chance for you to visit a new place with your loved one. While you're waiting for the sun to set, it may be a good idea to play a few games to occupy the time. You can try card games, like UNO or Old Maid. Also, feel free to bring a healthy snack along to share!
Have a concert with your favorite songs. - Music has been known to bring people together for centuries. It provides a total brain workout and helps keep our brains engaged as the body ages. It can also reduce anxiety, improve mood and memory, and helps to form healthy sleeping habits. You and your loved one can pick out a list of your favorite songs and have a sing-along concert from just about anywhere! This is a great way to make a memory that will last a lifetime. If you'd like, you can also invite others to join in and put on a great show!
Try a new snack recipe. - Food is another excellent way to bring people together! Trying something new with a loved one is always a fun thing to do. Finding something you both like to eat can be tricky, so try to plan ahead. Keep in mind that you should stay away from foods that are high in salt during warmer weather months to reduce the risk of dehydration.
Check-in and catch up. - With busy schedules, it can be challenging to keep in touch with loved ones as much as we'd like to. It is important that your senior loved ones regularly interact with others to help keep their minds sharp and alert and their spirits up! Simply calling your loved ones to talk about their day, scheduling a lunch date, or catching up over a cool glass of lemonade would be a great activity to partake in. If you live away from your senior loved one, our caring and compassionate caregivers are ready and available to spend time with them.
