Home Care for Veterans

Visiting Angels
Birmingham, AL

Visiting Angels of Birmingham, AL is a home care agency offering non-medical support and companionship to aging adults who require assistance with everyday tasks and daily activities. Long term home care can be very difficult for family members to accomplish - yet most families want to help their loved one remain in the comfort of home. A veterans home care program through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can help veterans cover their in-home care costs.

The Veterans Affairs Supportive Home Care program is funded by the VA and is there to help veterans and their surviving spouses obtain the services they need to remain independent and comfortable in their own homes.

Visiting Angels is contracted with the VA to provide help with activities of daily living, as well as companionship, transportation services, and respite care for family caregivers who need time to attend to their own needs.

We are here to assist seniors with applying for VA benefits and other forms of financial assistance - a process that can sometimes be extensive and complex. We work closely with local VA offices and other organizations to ensure that you are able to receive all benefits that you are entitled to.

If you are a veteran or a surviving spouse in need of home care services, contact the Visiting Angels’ Birmingham, AL local office to learn more about how we can help you get the care you need, free of charge.

How Does Visiting Angels Help Veterans?

Visiting Angels professional caregivers assist with personal care tasks as well as providing skilled care. We help with a range of needs, including wound care, palliative care, hospice care, end of life care, long term care, memory care, and more.

Scheduling a free home care consultation with Visiting Angels is the first step toward connecting your loved one with the care they need. During the consultation, you can discuss whether they qualify for veterans’ benefits and how to apply.

How Do Veterans Benefits Work?

U.S. military veterans in Birmingham, AL may qualify for personal care benefits through several different VA programs. Depending on the type of care needed, any of these programs can be a good fit, providing the care needed for veterans's comfort, health, and peace of mind.

Here’s how each program works:

Aid and Attendance program

Veterans of any age who receive a VA pension may receive Aid and Attendance benefits if they also meet any of the following criteria:

  • need help with daily activities
  • bed-bound
  • live in a nursing home
  • have limited eyesight

Eligible veterans may also be able to get “Housebound” benefits if they need to spend most of their time at home due to a permanent disability.

Community Care Network benefits

If a veteran qualifies for Community Care Network benefits, they may be eligible for help with in-home care costs to support their quality of life.

A service care coordinator, similar to a social worker, will be assigned to qualified veterans. The coordinator will establish how much and what type of care is needed; we will work together with both you and your coordinator to provide a wide range of home care services.

Birmingham’s Veteran Care Community

VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide

The Homemaker and Home Health Aide (H/HHA) program offers skilled care and homemaking services. This program can greatly reduce any need for hospitalization or community living centers by helping veterans receive high levels of care. H/HHA is covered by the VA healthcare system; however, some veterans in this program may owe a copayment for care, depending on their income level.
