Visiting Angels in Northern Idaho is here to assist Veterans and their families in starting the process of applying for Veteran’s Administration benefits, specifically for homemaker and/or home health aide services. 

If you or a loved one has served in the United States military, you may be eligible for benefits that can help cover the cost of in-home care, such as HHA services and Respite Care. These programs are designed to assist Veterans with daily living activities and provide much-needed relief to family caregivers.

What’s important to know is that these benefits are not limited by age or disability status. Whether you are a younger or older Veteran, with or without a service-related disability, you may qualify for these services depending on your medical needs.

How These Programs Can Assist You

Home Health Aide (HHA) Services:
HHA services help Veterans maintain independence at home by offering support with tasks like:

• Personal care (dressing, bathing, hygiene)
• Medication reminders and dementia care
• Assistance with mobility and incontinence
• Meal preparation, light housekeeping, and laundry

Respite Care Services:

Respite Care gives primary caregivers (often a spouse or family member) a temporary break, ensuring the Veteran continues to receive the care they need while the primary caregiver gets rest.

Steps to Access VA Benefits:

If you're not yet enrolled with the VA, here’s how to get started:

• Apply for VA health care at www.va.gov/health-care/how-to-apply.
• Complete the form 10-10-EZ on the VA site  at  the Veteran's va.gov site, as directed.
• Submit the application, including your DD-214 form (if you need a copy, the VA can help by asking for a copy from the VA).
• For assistance, you can reach out to the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center at 509-434-7009.
• If you need help filling out the application, the Spokane American Legion can assist. Visit them at 4815 N. Assembly, Bldg 6A, Spokane, WA, or call 509-434-7750.
• Schedule an assessment with a VA doctor to evaluate your care needs. You can call 509-434-7026 for help finding a provider.
• Request HHA and/or Respite Care services and ask for Visiting Angels of Coeur d'Alene to be your care provider.

HHA and respite visits are assigned (based on need). Once an Authorization (Referral Notice) is faxed to our office by the Spokane VA Medical Center, care can begin often within a week. We work hard to ensure your care is scheduled as quickly as possible.

No Bills for Approved Care!

Visiting Angels of Coeur d'Alene will directly bill the VA for approved care, and no bills or invoices will be sent to you. Visiting Angels of Coeur d’Alene and Northern Idaho is an Authorized Community Network Provider, which allows us to work with the Department of Veteran Affairs directly to provide eligible Veterans with private in-home care services. We can also help point you or your family to the right contacts within the VA who will assist you in applying for the appropriate benefits.
