A Complete Guide to Beating Anxious Thoughts

A Complete Guide to Beating Anxious Thoughts

Anxiety affects many people on a daily basis. Anxiety is more prevalent among seniors because of their decreasing independence. AgGPonline.org points out that anxiety is a common illness among older adults, affecting as many as 10-20 percent of the older population, though it is often undiagnosed.

Many older adults try to avoid anxious thoughts, which can ultimately prove harmful and unhealthy. Anxiety is the most common mental health problem for women, and the second most common for men, after substance abuse. You are not alone if you, or a loved one, have experienced anxious thoughts.

Practice Focused, Deep Breathing

Pay attention to your breathing patterns in order to calm anxious thoughts. When we are anxious, our breathing speeds up and our hearts beat faster than they should, resulting in heart arrhythmias. When anxiety takes over, breathe slowly through the nose and exhale out the mouth. Repeat this breathing pattern until you feel your breathing slow down. During this time, your anxious thoughts will disappear as you focus on your breathing.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being, according to Healthline.com. It is also known as essential oil therapy. Aromas such as lavender and chamomile have been shown to soothe the mind and body. Consider adding an essential oil diffuser to your senior loved one's bedroom. The diffuser will release an aroma that will calm the mind and ease anxiety.

It is said that the scents that are released by the oil affect the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that influences hormones. A scent's effects can vary from person to person, but it can affect your mood, metabolism, stress levels, and libido.

Write Down Thoughts

A journal is a great way to calm anxiety and ease the mind. The purpose of journaling is to better understand thoughts and feelings by writing them down. Journing can help your senior loved one gain control over their emotions and better understand their feelings. Research has shown that expressive writing can improve concentration and memory. Simply writing down what you did during the day can help decrease anxiety.

Get a Breath of Fresh Air

Fresh air is always good for the soul, especially when anxiety sets in. If your senior loved one is feeling anxious encourage them to take a step outside to collect their thoughts and regain their composure. Just being outside is known to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. Take a deep breath of fresh air and get back to living!
