Home Care for Veterans
Veterans Home Care - El Paso, TX
With the growing number of elderly veterans in the United States, a major concern for many of them is how they can afford personalized senior care. It can be a big financial challenge for not only them but their families as well. What many veterans might not know is that they may be eligible for in-home personal care benefits through the Veterans Administration (VA).
Visiting Angels is a home care agency specifically designed to help seniors and aging adults with non-medical assistance and companionship. We have multiple locations nationwide, including El Paso, Texas, to help serve you and your loved ones.
According to the US Census, there are almost ~50,000 veterans in the El Paso area. With a population of about ~870,000, that means that more than 5% of the total El Paso population is a veteran, or about 1-in-20. Many of these veterans are getting older and need help with daily activities.
Visiting Angels works closely with the VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care (HHHA) program, which is a program that helps veterans and their surviving spouses secure veterans home care to stay independent and comfortable in their own home. This program is funded by Veterans Affairs and allows Visiting Angels to offer assistance with daily activities, such as:
- Getting from one place to another
- Eating
- Bathing
- Personal grooming
- Meal preparation
- Medication Reminders
Other services like companionship, transportation services, and respite care for family caregivers who need a break are also offered.
On top of the HHHA program, Veterans Affairs also offers the Aid and Attendance program, which provides financial assistance to veterans and their surviving spouses who need home care. The financial aid from this program is intended to cover the costs of in-home care, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes.
Who can qualify for these programs?
If you or your loved one is a US military veteran, you may qualify for the HHHA program or the VA Aid and Attendance Program. The Veterans Administration helped establish these under the Homemaker Home Health Aide Care Act for veterans who need personalized care at home.
Whether or not you qualify for home health care depends on your location. All enrolled veterans are eligible for the program, but it may not be available in some areas and some veterans may not meet certain criteria:
- If you don’t need assistance with at least one of the following: running errands, buying groceries, attending medical appointments, cooking healthy meals, remembering to take medications, bathing, and getting dressed.
- You didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge.
- If you enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered active duty after October 16, 1981
- You must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which you were called to active duty (but some exceptions apply).
If you’re interested in learning more or you’re still not sure whether or not you qualify, make sure to contact us. We’ll walk you through every step of the process to determine if you’re eligible.
