Stroke Prevention Tips

Every year, nearly 800,000 people in the US experience a stroke. Many of these incidents lead to long term disability and death, particularly for older adults.

Essential Advice for Protecting Your Health

Age, genetics, and lifestyle factors all contribute to your stroke risk, but according to the American Heart Association, up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented. While you can’t reverse your family history, here are several critical steps to take now to decrease your chance of having a stroke.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Being obese significantly ups your odds of experiencing a stroke. Eating a nutritious diet filled with fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins will help control your weight. Additionally, certain meal plans that are low in cholesterol and saturated fats, such as the Mediterranean diet, have been shown to decrease stroke risk.

Keep Medical Conditions Under Control

It’s crucial to work with your health care provider to get any chronic medical issues or conditions you may have under control. High cholesterol, blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes have all been shown to greatly increase stroke risk.

Stay Physically Active

Regular physical activity will lower your weight, help you stay healthy and energized, and can lower your chances of a stroke by 25 percent. The good news is you don’t have to workout for hours a day to achieve your goals- a daily walk around your neighborhood or swim at the Farmington Community Civic Center can make a big difference. 30 minutes a day, five times a week is all you need!

Don’t Smoke

It’s no secret that smoking causes many health problems, including strokes. The habit speeds up clot formation by thickening your blood and building plaque in the arteries. If you’re a smoker, talk to your doctor about smoking cessation aids, such as nicotine patches, medication, and counseling.

Drink Only in Moderation

While small amounts of alcohol are generally safe to consume, some studies show that more than two drinks a day can sharply increase stroke risk. Keep portion sizes small, and try sticking to more “heart-friendly” choices, like red wine, when possible.

Know the Signs of a Stroke

It can be difficult to recognize when a stroke is taking place. Be aware of stroke symptoms, as the first three hours make a critical difference between recovery and disability.
