Fall Prevention Program for the Elderly Living in Jersey City, NJ and the Surrounding Area

Fall Prevention Program for Seniors

Safe and Steady fall prevention is a program for the elderly offered by Visiting Angels of Jersey City. When a fall, or slip, is prevented a senior's risk of hurting themselves is decreased. Injuries that result from falls and slips are the number one reason that seniors lose their independence—this is why fall prevention is an important part of aging in place.

Why Fall Prevention for Seniors is Important

Our team at Visiting Angels of Jersey City is dedicated to being a support system for seniors so they can remain safely in their homes. We want our seniors to the age where they feel safest, happiest, and most comfortable— this is why we take fall prevention programs for the elderly so seriously.

It is more common for a senior to fall than a younger adult; 1 in 3 seniors take a serious fall each year. These falls are due to numerous risk factors that are most common among aging seniors. Risks include:

  • Decreased strength
  • Poor coordination
  • Limited mobility
  • Reduced eyesight
  • Hearing loss
  • Stiff or painful joints
  • Health complications
  • Cognitive disorders
  • Multiple medications

Serious injuries are more likely to happen when a senior falls; in most cases, injuries have a life-altering/threatening effect on seniors. Hip fractures are the most common and dangerous injury for a senior; the recovery time for this injury can take up to 12 months, may require transitional care, and often comes with a significant risk of life-threatening complications. The majority of seniors never fully recover from a hip fracture, leaving seniors to lose their independence.

But don’t worry because most falls are preventable with our program for the elderly. Our Safe and Steady program for the elderly is a tool for your loved one, it can reduce the odds of them falling in the most common location—their home.

How to Prevent Falls at Home for Seniors

You may not realize, but more than 75% of senior falls happen in or around the home. Simply put, these falls can be prevented if the right precautions are taken around the home. Our Safe and Steady Fall Prevention Resource Guide is available to help identify risks in the home and provide attentive home care. This guide also gives examples on how to reduce said risks.

This guide includes key information about:

  • Physical, social, and emotional health impacts of falls by the elderly
  • Environmental risk factors that increase the likelihood of falls at home
  • Precautions you can take to eliminate fall risks from the home
  • Design changes that can reduce seniors' risk of an at-home fall
  • Lifestyle changes that can further reduce fall risks for seniors

This guide also provides a list of home modifications that can be used to reduce your loved one's risk of falling in the home. It also contains a 59-point home safety checklist.

Get Started with Visiting Angels of Jersey City

We are dedicated to this program for the elderly, so much so that our fall prevention extends into our home care services. We have caregivers that are able to reduce a client’s falling risks in multiple ways, all depending on the care the client is needing.

Companion care comes with a caregiver not only lending help with the day-to-day tasks, but also maintaining a safe and tidy home that eliminates any falling risks. With personal care services, your loved one will receive help with tasks like dressing, bathing, and mobility—this is possible with the fear of falling being eliminated.

Fall prevention is also an important part of several other Visiting Angels services, including our Alzheimer's care, dementia care, and Ready-Set-Go Home transitional care services. We offer more than one program for the elderly with our plans.
