How Do I Protect My Elderly Parents’ Bank Accounts?

Aging parents are more vulnerable to scammers and financial mistakes, which leaves many children helplessly wondering how to protect their elderly parents' bank accounts. In recent years, we've seen scammers become more and more aggressive about targeting seniors, so it's more important than ever to be watchful and aware.

In this post, we'll explore some proactive steps that can help you safe-guard your aging parent's financial well-being and peace of mind.

Talk Openly with Your Parents

Start by having an open and honest conversation with your parents about the importance of protecting their finances. You can tell them honest and true stories about other seniors who have lost everything as the result of these aggressive scams. The internet and the news are full of these stories!

Once they understand the risks, take the time to explain the steps you can take together to ensure their financial security. Establishing trust and transparency is key.

Monitor Account Activity

Early detection can make all the difference. Regularly monitoring your parents' bank account activity can help detect any unusual transactions early.

However, it can be hard to convince parents to give you access. I remember having this discussion with my own parents, and it was a very long and difficult process. You may need to compromise along the way. For example, if your parents don't want you to have ongoing access, ask if you can set up online banking alerts so you can be notified about suspicious transactions. changes in account settings, or any suspicious activity that develops.

Just make sure that you are careful when you review those notices, because many financial scams that target seniors mimic bank messages. You can't protect your parents if you aren't already scam-aware yourself.

Simplify Their Finances

Help your parents consolidate their accounts to make monitoring easier. If they are willing, you can help simplify their finances by reducing the number of accounts and credit cards. This can minimize the risk of fraud and make it easier to track their financial activities.

Set Up Banking Automations

Encourage your parents to use direct deposit for any payments they receive, such as Social Security or pension payments. This reduces the risk of lost or stolen checks.

Set their bills up on autopay so that they don’t have to worry about writing checks or managing payments. The more that you can simplify, the easier it will be for your parents to manage. It also helps prevent late fees.

Use Strong Passwords

Ensure that your parents use strong, unique passwords for their online banking accounts and change them regularly. Encourage them to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a text message code or fingerprint.

Educate Them About Scams

Do your parents know how scammers target the elderly? If not, you need to educate them about phishing emails, fake phone calls, and other types of scams. Teach them to be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information and to never share their bank details over the phone or online.

Consider a Financial Power of Attorney

A financial power of attorney (POA) allows you to manage your parents' finances if they become unable to do so themselves. This legal document grants you the authority to make financial decisions on their behalf, ensuring their accounts are managed responsibly. It can make a huge difference!

Consult with an attorney to set up a POA that meets your parents' needs. Remember, that if you decide to seek a POA, you will need your parent’s consent. The form usually has to be notarized and witnessed as well.

Review and Update Beneficiary Information

Has it been a while since your parents updated their information? Make sure that their accounts have a beneficiary listed and check that their policies are up to date. This can prevent complications and ensure their assets are distributed according to their wishes when the time comes.

Work with a Trusted Financial Advisor

If your parents have significant assets or complex financial situations, you may need to consider working with a trusted financial advisor. A professional can provide valuable guidance on managing and protecting their finances, as well as help identify potential risks.

Stay Involved

Check in with your parents often about their financial situation. Many seniors who get scammed are ashamed and don't want to talk about it, so they may not be forthcoming if something happens. It's important to stay connected and keep that communication open so that you can help them recover if something does happen.
