Summer Activities to Keep Everyone Engaged
Getting out and about is essential for everyone, including those in their golden years, to maintain physical and mental well-being. Fortunately, the East Valley offers plenty of activities suited for all interests and ages. Hit your local library to learn about Phoenix’s Culture Passes for two free tickets to many museums and other fun places of interest.
Ways to Stay Active This Summer
While summer in Phoenix can be scorchingly hot there are still options for beating the heat and having fun. Here are 6 exciting ideas for staying cool, engaged, and social this season.
Take a Water Cruise
When family or friends come to visit, consider exploring beautiful Saguaro Lake aboard the Desert Belle. The 80 minute narrated cruise features breathtaking views of the desert scenery and glimpses of local wildlife. Enjoy a gorgeous sunset while listening to the captain explain the fascinating history of the Sonoran Desert. On weekends, the Desert Belle has live music cruises to enjoy. The enclosed lower cabin is climate-controlled and fully accessible for individuals with disabilities, making this cruise even more enticing! It’s also much cooler in the evening on the lake if the sunset is part of your destination goal! The Dolly Steamboat is another option and that is nestled in the heart of the Superstition Mountains on Canyon Lake.
Stroll at the Park
Go for a scenic walk in the very early morning to get your day off to a great start before temperatures get too hot. The East Valley has no shortage of senior-friendly parks (and pools too for that matter!) to explore:
- Break up your routine and visit Riverview Park for tranquil water views, easy walking trails, and shaded benches for when you need to take a break. If your grandkids are visiting, there are plenty of play structures and a splash pad to entertain them.
- Seniors in the Tempe area can take a leisurely waterfront stroll at beautiful Kiwanis Park. The park features easy walking paths, accessible bathrooms, and plenty of shaded areas to relax.
- Chandler’s Desert Breeze Park is a true hidden gem of the community. Spend a morning fishing at the waterfront or bird watching at the hummingbird habitat.
- Feeling adventurous? Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction has easy trails in a gorgeous desert setting. Witness stunning views of the Superstition Mountains while taking a gentle hike on the Native Plant Trail.
If you don’t need the outdoor atmosphere to get your steps in daily, Chandler Mall opens bright and early at 6 a.m. for walkers to take advantage of a nice big track and the added bonus of window shopping while they walk. Superstition Mall in East Mesa opens at 8:30 a.m. for walkers.
Relax with Nature
The Queen Creek Botanical Gardens is a beautiful experience for anyone who loves to connect with nature. These expertly maintained botanical gardens offer a serene escape and a feast for the senses! Reviewers seem to all agree that this is an excellent place to relax, reflect, and find balance. The garden is wheelchair accessible and offers a senior discount. Another accessible, gentle trail with great bird watching is The Riparian Preserve in the heart of Gilbert.
Visit a Museum
Be a tourist in your own city and check out a local museum. Mesa has a vibrant arts and culture scene that includes the Arizona Museum of Natural History, Mesa Arts Center, Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum, and more. Chandler Museum and Tempe Museum of History both showcase the local history of their respective towns.
Attend a Class at the Senior Center
Want to learn a new skill or take up a hobby? The Aster Senior Centers have a variety of classes and events to choose from, including Tai Chi, bingo, and crocheting. Get to know other Mesa residents at a movie night or belt out a tune at karaoke. Chances are, you can find something that will pique your interest on their event calendar.
Go on a Day Trip
Greater Phoenix has so much to see and do! Day trips are a perfect way to explore a new area, and you don’t have to go far. Take a short drive with family and friends to the magical Butterfly Wonderland or OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale or the scenic Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. Don’t forget the MIM! The Musical Instrument Museum is a ‘must-see’ destination filled with artifacts and the history of all kinds of different musical instruments, special exhibits, classes, concerts and more. Enjoy the air conditioning while strolling through exhibits with your family. Both Scottsdale and Phoenix have lovely art museums as well.
