Types of VA Home Health Benefits

Aid and Attendance Program

The Aid and Attendance benefit offers financial support to veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities due to age, disability, or a health condition. Qualified veterans will have completed 90 days of active service. Once enrolled, this benefit is added to the monthly VA pension, and can be used to pay for in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home care.

Homemaker and Home Health Aide (H/HHA) Program

The Home Health Aide Care Program offers in-home health care services that have been ordered by a VA physician. Eligibility requirements state that the veteran must be enrolled in the VA health care system, and also show a clinical need for types of care including daily living assistance, medication management, physical therapy, and homemaking services.

Eligibility will be determined by VA health care providers, and a care plan developed by your VA care team. Once approved, this benefit is paid out directly to home care providers to cover the cost of your care.

When Should Veterans Apply For Benefits?

The best time to apply for home care benefits through the VA is well before they are needed. Application wait times can be very long; the application should be started as soon as possible.
