Managing Depression In Seniors: Local Care Resources
Depression affects more than 21 million US adults each year. Some people dismiss the signs and symptoms of depression because they think what they’re experiencing is temporary and will go away with time. However, it’s essential to understand that depression is more than feeling sad or anxious. It’s a serious mood disorder that can slowly start to control a person’s life if they don’t find a way to manage their depression.
For many years, people unfairly associated depression with young adults, saying it was a condition that only affected Millennials. Thanks to extensive research and studies, we now know there is no age limit to depression. Many adults of all ages live with depression. For family members and fellow caregivers alike, it’s important to understand our role in helping clients manage their depression so they can continue living the quality of life they deserve.
Caregiver’s Role In Helping Senior Clients Manage Depression
We may not be mental health care professionals as caregivers, but that doesn’t mean our work can’t positively impact our clients. By providing companionship, helping clients find mental health resources, and encouraging local engagement, our caregivers at Visiting Angels Mobile help clients manage their depression.
Provide Companionship
One of the primary roles of being a caregiver is to provide companionship and lend an ear when clients are exhibiting signs or symptoms of depression. Everyone’s depression can stem from something different, but for many seniors, depression can come from social isolation or loneliness. Many seniors don’t have people living with them or friends who can easily get out to spend time with them. Some are restricted to their homes and may not have family nearby to provide company.
Caregivers can combat some of the loneliness and isolation experienced by senior clients simply by showing up for work. We talk to them about their day and ask them questions about their past, families, hobbies, and dreams. We may also take them to a park or for a neighborhood walk. Anything our caregivers can do to keep clients engaged, even if it seems small, can make a difference in their lives.
Help Find Local Mental Health Resources
Many people with depression want help, but they don’t know who to turn to for support. As caregivers, we can direct our clients to local mental health resources throughout Mobile.
A few mental health resources in Mobile include:
These organizations are not only helpful for seniors, but many of them may also provide resources or advice for caregivers who are caring for clients with depression.
Encourage Local Engagement
Since there’s a significant connection between older adults who are lonely or isolated and depression, finding ways to encourage community engagement is a great way to help manage depressive symptoms. Local clubs and organizations we may recommend for our clients include:
- Mobile Public Library Book Clubs: Get involved in a local book club, where clients can read interesting stories and discuss them with other community members at the library.
- Fitness Sessions at Personal Edge Fitness: Workout classes are a great place to meet new people. Encouraging physical movement is also helpful in managing depression.
- Crafting Workshops at Small Craft Studio: Creative clients can try a crafting workshop to learn a new skill or enjoy an old pastime.
