About Wales, MA

Located 70 miles southwest of Boston near Lake George, Wales is a small town in Hampden County, Massachusetts. First settled by Europeans in 1726, it was officially named "South Brimfield" on August 23, 1775. It was later renamed “Wales” on February 20, 1828, after James Lawrence Wales, Esq., a local benefactor and prominent member of the town. The first settlers crafted handmade boots, wool, and dairy. 

By 1890, Wales had built one post office, a public hall, a public library, six schoolhouses, a Baptist church, and a Methodist church. 

The Town of Wales, individual property owners, and businesses are collectively responsible for monitoring and maintaining the land, lake, inlet streams, underground springs, and the streams and ponds in the area. Currently, this quaint little town has an estimated population of approximately 2,000 residents.
