How to Maintain an Active Social Life as a Caregiver

How to Maintain an Active Social Life as a Caregiver

Though fulfilling and flexible, a career as an in-home caregiver can also be demanding. By their very nature, caregivers are giving people who put others’ needs ahead of their own. As such, it may be easy for them to fall into the trap of neglecting their social life.

However, failing to maintain an active social life can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, depression, and low self-esteem.

Staying Socially Connected

Don’t be an island. Here are practical tips for nurturing your social life as a caregiver.

Schedule In Social Time

Even if it’s just for a few hours once a week, try blocking out times in your busy schedule to spend with friends and family. Grab lunch with your sister or enjoy a spa day with your best friend. Don’t forget to add these engagements to your physical or digital calendar! Proactively carving out time for social interactions makes us much more likely to follow through.

Connect with Loved Ones Digitally

Between your career and home life, it might be challenging to meet up with loved ones face-to-face. If you’re short on time, plan a Zoom call. You can connect with your friends and family from the comfort of your own home. One fun idea is to cook dinner together via Zoom. Position your phone, tablet, or laptop on a stand and prepare the same meal as your loved one as you catch up.

Have a Monthly Date Night with Your Spouse

Spending time with your partner is just as important as socializing with your family and friends. However, if you both have hectic careers, it can be tough to plan a romantic evening together. Commit to enjoy one date night per month. It can be as simple as cooking and eating dinner together at home while the kids sleep over at their friends’ place. Spending alone time with your spouse keeps the spark alive.

Short, Frequent Check-Ins

Every interaction with your loved ones doesn’t have to be for hours at a time. Short but frequent communications, such as emails or texts, can be just as impactful as hour-long phone calls. Haven’t talked to your mom or bestie in a while? Shoot them a quick text to see how they’re doing.

Get Physical

Caregivers should not only maintain an active social life but also their physical health. Kill two birds with one stone by joining a fitness class with your friend. Or, plan a jog or walk in the park. You two can build up a sweat while enjoying each other’s company.
