Home Care for Veterans
Aging brings a need for additional support, but family caregivers can't always keep up, and seniors often postpone finding professional caregivers due to financial limitations.
Visiting Angels believes that all military veterans deserve the very best care and the option to age in place, in the comfort of their own homes, if they choose. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has multiple programs to cover the expenses related to in-home care. Still, many vets and their family members have yet to learn that they are eligible.
VA Home Care Benefit Options
Aid and Attendance Program
The Aid and Attendance benefit helps eligible veterans and their spouses who need a helping hand with day-to-day living.
You might be eligible for Aid and Attendance if you have served 90 or more days on active duty, with at least one of those days during wartime. To qualify for this program, veterans have to meet specific financial criteria regarding income and assets, and a VA physician must determine that they need home-based care services. Funds are tax-free; if you qualify, you can get up to $1,936 monthly for a veteran, $1,244 for surviving spouses, or $2,295 for a vet and their partner. You can use this money for a wide range of care needs in various settings, including at home.
Aging isn't always easy, but this type of care can make a huge difference, helping seniors stay in their homes and remain as autonomous as possible.
Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers another option to help vets in Wilmington, NC with home care costs: the Homemaker and Home Health Aide program (H/HHA). This program is designed to provide in-home care services directly to veterans in their own residences.
If you're in the VA healthcare system and your doctor says you need skilled help at home - maybe for wound care, managing meds, or physical therapy - H/HHA can step in. This benefit covers a whole range of home care services. Need a hand with housekeeping, laundry, or cooking? They've got you covered. Could you use some help with bathing, dressing, or getting around? It covers that, too. Having a personal helper right at home makes everyday tasks much more manageable.
H/HHA is free for most veterans. Depending on your financial picture, you may need to pay a copay.
While applying for benefits can be complex and challenging, don't let that discourage you from accessing these life-changing programs. If you need help with the application process, Visiting Angels of Wilmington, NC, offers support to guide you through it.
When To Apply For VA Home Care Benefits
Applying for VA benefits well before you need them is best. The process can be laborious, and wait times can be extended. Visiting Angels can help with every stage of the process.
