Signs Your Senior Parent Needs a Hearing Aid

Signs Your Senior Parent Needs a Hearing Aid

Hearing loss is a major concern for seniors, with one third of adults over the age of 65 experiencing the issue. Left untreated, hearing loss can actually affect cognitive health, leading to dementia and other conditions.

Recognizing Hearing Loss in Your Senior Loved One

As your loved one ages, it’s important to be aware of the signs of hearing loss. Early detection and treatment are key to keeping them connected with the world around them. If you notice your senior parent exhibit the following signs, it’s time for them to speak with their doctor.

Trouble Following Conversations

An early sign of hearing loss is having trouble keeping up with conversations, particularly when two or more people are speaking. Background noises can enhance the issue and make it harder for them to understand what’s being said. Seniors may ask others to repeat themselves often or struggle to follow group discussions.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the sensation of ringing in the ears, but can also present itself as a clicking or humming noise. It can be incredibly distressing and lead to communication difficulties. The majority of people who experience tinnitus have some form of hearing loss.

Struggling with Phone Calls

If your parent constantly misunderstands you while chatting on the phone, it could be because their hearing has declined. They may claim that you keep mumbling or become frustrated and avoid phone conversations all together.

“Ignoring” You

Sometimes seniors are able to hide hearing loss by lip reading during face-to-face conversations. However, this tactic isn’t effective when their back is turned away from you. Pay attention to how they react when you’re trying to get their attention in this manner. When they don’t respond to their name being called, it’s time to get their hearing checked.

Having the Volume On Too Loud

Does your senior parent blast the TV or radio? Some hearing loss is normal with age, but if the noise is at a level that’s uncomfortably loud for others, they’re most likely experiencing a more severe hearing issue.

Isolating Themselves

Conversation is an integral part of social gatherings. For someone with untreated hearing loss, it’s tiring for their brain to attempt to make sense of sounds all the time. If your parent is avoiding activities with others and withdrawing, it could be because they are embarrassed and exhausted by their hearing struggles. This can be detrimental to their self esteem and lead to social isolation over time.
