Is It Time for a Medical Alert System?

Is It Time for a Medical Alert System?

Around 27 percent of adults older than 60 live alone in the United States. Living alone as an older adult puts you at risk for at-home injuries, usually because of falls. Nearly one in four seniors in the United States falls annually; of those falls, almost 3 million seniors receive emergency medical treatment because of fall-related injuries. If an older adult is alone and falls, injuring themselves enough that it disables them from getting help, their life could be at risk.

That’s where medical alert systems come in handy. Medical alert systems won’t prevent falls or other emergencies within the home, but they allow seniors who live alone to get help immediately.

What is a medical alert system?

A medical alert system is a device that allows users to connect with help in a medical emergency. Many older adults have wearable medical alert systems, such as bracelets or lanyards, making calling for help from anywhere within the home accessible.

How much does a medical alert system cost?

Medical alert systems have a base price for the device and a monthly service fee. The base cost can range depending on the sophistication of the equipment but typically range between $50-$300. The monthly service fee can begin at approximately $20 and may be as expensive as $50. When budgeting for medical alert systems, you’ll also want to consider batteries, repairs, upgrades, and maintenance.

When is it time to consider a medical alert system?

You’ll want to consider a medical alert system if you’ve recently fallen at home or have a medical condition that may require emergency medical attention, such as epilepsy or heart disease. It’s never too early to consider a medical alert system, especially if you’re an older adult living alone. And it’s better to have one installed before an at-home medical emergency.

Medical alert systems to consider

There are many medical alert systems available for purchase, but a few popular ones you may want to consider:

  • GetSafe: Get help throughout the home by pushing a button, pulling a cord, or using voice activation to call 911. Equipment starts at $79, and services start at $29.95 monthly for 24/7 monitoring. Auto fall detection and mobile GPS options are available.
  • LifeFone: Stay protected at home or on the go with 24/7 mobile coverage across the United States. Monthly plans start at $41.95.
  • One Call Alert: Get the help you need with a press of a button from One Call Alert. Monthly services range from $22.95 to $39.95.
  • ADT Medical Alert: Get worry-free at-home protection from ADT, one of the nation’s leading security brands. Basic medical alerts start at $26.99 monthly.

Is a medical alert system enough?

A medical alert system is an excellent tool in an emergency, but it may not be enough to keep some seniors safe at home. Seniors with a higher risk of falls or at-home emergencies may benefit from working with an at-home caregiver.

At Visiting Angels, we work with seniors throughout Pikesville, Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Glyndon, Mt. Washington, Finksburg, and Baltimore to ensure they age safely and comfortably at home.
