How We're Redefining Home Care and Resetting the Bar on Quality

If you’re considering home care services for a disabled or senior family member, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.  Whether you're in East Beach of Norfolk, Old Towne of Portsmouth, Harbour View or the city and county of Suffolk, we at Visiting Angels understand how stressful this time can be -- so, we're here to be a resource.

  • Our staff is here to provide the assistance families need to make informed decisions
  • Our home care services provide assistance for seniors and disabled adults who want to age in place.

Redefining In-Home Senior Care and Resetting the Bar on Quality

Our goal is to totally redefine the value of in-home senior care.  We take the basic home-care model, which is centered on completing a checklist of tasks, and added a person-centered focus.  We coordinate with and apply the research from some of the leaders in gerontology and senior care. And we add a focus on emotional care, social care, and quality of life.  We want to build relationships and trust with those we support.

Because caring about people doesn't come from a checklist of tasks.

It's why we are continually voted the top home care company by the community and ranked as the best in the area by professional quality ranking firms.

Applying the Research from the World's Gerontology Leaders Shapes Our Cutting-edge Care.

We also stay on the cutting edge of senior care.  We have some of the world's leading research centers on aging and care right here in Norfolk.  We stay abreast with the research from the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Glennon Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology as well as the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Virginia Center on Aging, and VCU Gerontology Team. We communicate with their research leaders to learn how we can apply it to our care. They work with our families to help plan their health and quality of life goals.  When you've used inputs from some of the world's foremost experts, it makes a difference.

Redefining Quality Home Care -- Building Great Relationships Creates Great Personal Care.

Hands holding handsWhen we started Visiting Angels home care in the Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk areas we wanted to totally redefine quality in home care services. In addition to the standard physical care most home care companies provide, we also put a big focus on emotional care, on social care, and quality of life.  We believe those aspects of care are as important as physical care.  When someone feels good about themselves and their situation, they do better; when someone is socially active, they are energized; when someone has a quality of life, they look forward to tomorrow.  It's about building relationships that creates great personal care.

Our "Imagination Program" identifies the activities Mom or Dad enjoys.  Our caregivers are trained to encourage Mom and Dad to be as active as possible. The caregivers work to find ways around any physical or mental impairment that prevents them from enjoying those activities.

When we finish, we want to know we made a difference in their life.

Have we gotten there?  Because of our efforts, we've been voted "Best of" homecare almost every year since we started.  But we know there's always more to do.

Caring About People, Not Just Providing Care For Them

Visiting Angels care is person-centered, not task centered.  That means we take the time to talk with you and understand your needs so we can create a plan that truly supports you and your family. Our Registered Nurse creates a care plan tailored to each individual.  Our caregivers are trained to develop a relationship with Mom and Dad. They continually pay attention to their actual needs as they carry out the plan.  In contrast, most care companies are task-centered.  They prepare a list of basic care tasks which they give to their caregivers to carry out -- no more, no less -- regardless of Mom or Dad's needs that day.

We choose only the best caregivers for our team.  We train and trust them to do what's right for your family.  Our motto is to "treat everyone like it's your own Mom or Dad."  It's their passion to make a difference that matters.

Our Goal Is to Be a Resource to Families.

Creating relationships and caring about people also means sharing our expertise.  Use our staff, our caregivers, or just our website to find quality senior/in-home care resources -- even if you aren't using our services!  We are here to help you find the best, most appropriate care.

We also stay up to date with the latest in available resources for seniors, regulations, and research.  Our Executive Director was appointed to the Virginia Commonwealth Council on Aging and the Home Care Association of America Virginia Board of Directors.
