Parkinson's Care

The number of individuals living with Parkinson's disease (PD) is expected to more than double over the next 10 years. This averages to approximately 1 new PD diagnosis every 9 minutes. Parkinson's is a disease that affects an individual's body movements and has a life-changing impact on parts of life that were once simple. Suddenly daily activities such as bathing, dressing, sleeping, and even walking become a challenge as well as a source of great frustration for patients. It is important for individuals diagnosed with PD to take steps to adapt their lifestyle and educate themselves about what lies ahead as the disease progresses. Home safety becomes paramount, and daily or even 24/7 assistance may be necessary, especially for individuals living alone. Many people will turn to home care to assist with these complex symptoms, but oftentimes agencies have limited knowledge about the best practices in caring for individuals with PD.

Visiting Angel's Parkinson's Care

Visiting Angels Minneapolis, West Metro, specializes in Parkinson's care, and our caregivers are trained to help. As an active member of The Parkinson's Foundation's Community Partners in Parkinson's Care (formerly Struther's Parkinson's Care Network), we work closely with Struther's Clinic, which has many locations across the Twin Cities. Our nurses and caregivers are trained to manage the unique challenges that accompany a Parkinson's disease diagnosis. Community Partners in Parkinson's Care training prepares and empowers our staff with ongoing support and education from PD experts along with developing best practices in PD care.

Consider in-home personal care services if your loved one is living with PD and you are concerned about their ability to continue living independently. Our care allows patients to remain in their own home, rather than moving to an assisted living facility. Caregivers ensure safety and provide peace of mind for the individual as well as their families. Examples of assistance our home care specialists provide include:

  1. Ambulation
  2. Assistance with ADLs
  3. Medication reminders
  4. Fall prevention/reduction
  5. Home safety recommendations
  6. Meal preparation
  7. Eating Assistance
  8. Positive companionship
"Our care providers are a great help to individuals with Parkinson's disease," says Larry Meigs, President and CEO of Visiting Angels. "Our companion care services ensure your loved one has regular support and companionship so they can continue to live safely and independently at home."
